Our home email server is down until further notice, which means I'm only getting lj notifications for replies to posts I've made. So my apologies if I seem to be ignoring you!

And thus: Cam, when you get home, the Spore demo creature maker is in shared/files.

Look what I made!:

Yeah, fallimar's are better, it was still fun :)

Also: note that, afaict, according to the TOS EA owns everything you make.

And mine aren't better, I just have far too much free time >..>

I've had a play around, but, to be perfectly honest, the editor is nowhere near as robust as I was hoping it would be. I want to do a lot more than it will let me, particularly in terms of symmetry, and so my experiences to date have been frustrating. It's also a helluva lot more cutesy than I was expecting, whihc also detracts from the experience.

Ah well.

Yeah, you certainly reach the limitations pretty quickly (though I imagine it'll be better in some ways in the full version) Luckily I had no particular expectations going in, so just had fun for 20 minutes.

I'll admit he's a professional graphic artist, and I suspect him of having access to the full version, but Gabe from Penny arcade made a nicely uncute creature. Well, aside from the dancing :)

yeah, I've found it hard to make some of the creatures I want to make, but then I'm hopeful that the peices to do that will be available in the full version...

also I hope that there is a lot more options for 'painting' the creatures. what's there really doesn't seem like enough to cover what exists, let alone whatever we want to drag out of our minds and put into the game.

I'm still looking forward to the game, but not nearly as much as I was, which I think is a pity. (not that I have time to play it...)

Releasing a limited free version and a full paid version of the creature creator was a very poor decision. People are going to get disappointed with the free version, and some will get turned off enough that it will hurt game sales.

I tend to agree. I'm bored of it already!

EDIT: I didn't realise the full version was available for purchase already. Hmm. I think some people will be put off, but others will be all "OMG must have full version this is so awesome", and might not have tried it otherwise. It's only $10 after all.

Which group will be larger is hard to tell (and now that I see how cheap it is I'd be tempted to buy it, except that (a) It's not out for Mac yet and (b) Cam's planning on buying the full version of Sore anyway)

that's like wow... blizzard own everything you *say* in game, even in private chats. It's kind of scary.

Looking through the creations of other people, it's not really looking like they've been able to overcome the limitations that were frustrating me.

I had some fun with my first creature, just messing around. For the second, I decided I wanted to try to recreate the Luggage. A mistake on my part. I hadn't even put on half the legs before my creature was too complex. Getting a single mouth to face the side rather than the front? Not possible, as asymmetry is, by and large, not permitted.

I also notice that you can't create shaggy/hairy monsters :(

I'm not sure that's true but thanks :)

Yeah, I've been burned by these sorts of editors before so just set myself the goal of "The sorts of things fallimar seems to have been able to make, but different". But I know how that frustration feels: a few years ago I decided to make a NeverWinter Nights version of "The Colour of Magic" and it was All Pain.
