Latest set of movies from Quickflix, most of which were pretty good.
(*)it's not that I find them offensive, but they don't make up for a lack of plot etc
(**)I know, I know, I'm such a "Won't somebody think of the impressionable gay children" wowser :)
- Psych 4/5: First disk only has the pilot which is pretty pathetic but it was a lot of fun. It's about a guy with super observation skills (like House or Sherlock Holmes, but younger and more cheerful. Just as arrogant and snarky though :)) He wants to get paid for solving crimes but the police think it's suspicious he "knows so much" so he sets himself up as a psychic.
- Bailey, Bill-Live at the Apollo: Part Troll 5/5: This was great
- Doctor Who-In the Beginning - Disc 1 3/5: So Slow And Dated. But kind of fun in a historical-reference sort of way, much more educational about the 60s than the caveman era :)
- Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle 3/5: This was like a not-quite-as-funny but more socially satirical version of "Dude Where's my Car". I quite enjoyed it, but did have to ignore the dooodgy attitudes towards women. Watch the trailer for bizarre cgi covering of nude scenes from the movie including a topless guy (oh noes man nipples!)
- Queer as Folk UK)-Series 1 Part 1 4/5: A lot more real feeling than the US version, but still pretty gratuitous with the gay sex and nudity(*). The whole underage sex thing squicks me a bit (there's a fairly clear "29 yr olds who sleep with 15 year olds are prats" message, but less of a "If you're 15 it's a bad idea to sleep with 29 year olds" message(**)) but it's a fairly engaging drama. I think people who like slash might like it?
- Tsubasa Chronicles - Reservoir Chronicle-Vol. 1 3/5: Pretty but completely ridiculous cross-over fanfiction of various Clamp anime by CLAMP. Not happy they fridged Sakura >:( (not a spoiler: this is the premise)
- Mushishi-Vol. 1 4/5: Veeeeery slow and understated anime set in an alternate Medieval Japan. Main character wanders from place to place helping people with nature spirity things.
- The Jane Austen Collection - Mansfield Park 3/5: Watchable, but not spectacular. Billy Piper's hair is implausibly peroxided looking but she acts ok :)
- Doctor Who-City of Death 4/5: This was pretty good, if a bit dated. I wrote some spoilery thoughts here
- Om Shanti Om 4/5: fun Bollywood movie about Bollywood
