Your anecdote seems to say "me and my ex weren't from quite the same social class as everyone else and that caused problems", so I'd tend to regard it as supporting my theory.

Although I think some of my social group would make an effort to accept a bogan partner, I suspect there's only a few about whom that hypothesis would hold up when the barbecue conversation turned to Summernats and not the Somerville.

Likewise my family, they're pretty tolerant and open-minded but that doesn't mean they have many friends who can't hold a conversation about books and politics to confirm all their little (and natural) prejudices.

After a few months to alienate myself from Australian society I feel the classism around the place more acutely than ever. It's real and ugly.
