I'd say more that "race" in the form of physical appearance and ancestry is entangled in a very complex way with ("race" in the form of) culture, ethnicity, tradition, etc. The nature of that entanglement and how it's dealt with, is significantly different between the US and Europe. And the history of US slavery is a major cause of that difference.
