yayyyy congrats!

Meeting people:
"Hi I'm Dr Sophie"
"Oh wow... can you diagnose [stuff]?"
"No, sorry, I'm not a medical doctor"
"Oh a Phd I get it. Cool. What in?"
"MATHS"
"Oh."

:)

Sciiiiiiitech! At least for the moment.

DR SOPHIE!! I can no longer greet you as Miss Sophie!! Well, I could, but I'd be wrong.

Congratulations.

Good to know! Now you can perform the Heimlich manoeuvre at restaurants and deliver babies on aeroplanes with added confidence.

PS: apparently there's a woman at IP Australia who is exactly like you in every way, but thirty years older.

Though not having done those things before, it will be hard to compare :P

People keep saying "I know someone JUST like you", it's very unnerving. One day I will meet one of these doppelgangers and either go "She's nothing like me!" and be very insulted, or be totally freaked out by our similarity and we'll have to fight to the death. Either way, worrying.

Hail! Sleet! Snow!

All weather to the great and powerful Maths Doctor!!!

[identity profile] mothwentbad.livejournal.com 2006-09-22 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's nuts. I hope to be in the same spot in another 4 or 5 years, but somehow it doesn't seem like I'm on pace for that.

What do you specialize in?

[identity profile] mothwentbad.livejournal.com 2006-09-22 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that was congratulatory enough. I'm sorry.

So... rock on. Very much so.

Contrary to the impression one might get of my character if this post is your first introduction to it, I am not actually the kind of person who expects random strangers to lavish extravagant praise on me whenever I see fit. Unextravagant praise suits me fine :)

Also: Algorithms for finite matrix groups, if that means anything to you. If it doesn't, may I reccomend this poster on my research.

As to doing a Phd: run now, while you still can! I mean...good luck :)

[identity profile] mothwentbad.livejournal.com 2006-09-22 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The circumstances are exceptional, though. I wouldn't have worried if you had made yourself a really nice turkey sandwich or whatever.

I know what a finite matrix group is, if it means what it sounds like it means. Beyond the definition of what one is, it means little to me.

As far as running goes, I think the PhD program is the proverbial frying pan. I'm told that getting some corporate job with a masters is easier, but I have confidence that I could manage to find it very hard and distressing. Who was it that said something like "those who think that math is difficult don't realize how complicated life is"?

[identity profile] mothwentbad.livejournal.com 2006-09-22 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, it wasn't as intimidating as it should've been. I think you're supposed to go nuts and alienate outsiders as much as possible - preferably, only you and maybe your advisor should be able to figure out anything from a quick glance at your poster at all.

Though finite groups in general freak me out. The idea that 1,000,000 and 1,000,001 have nothing to do with each other at all, for example, drives my epsilon-loving head nuts - I just don't like factorizations, I guess. If I had a thing for finite groups, though, I could've stayed at my undergrad institution - University of Florida - and had a pretty good time. I would've missed out on Michigan beer, though, so it's for the best this way.

That's why I have given up on my maths career and gone into science communication, I never really got the knack of impressive but impenetrable jargon.

Still, even knowing I probably wasn't cut out for a Phd it was still less scary than getting a real job, so I understand where you're coming from :)

Also, random aside: checked out your lj, those bunnies are the most adorable thing ever.

Bunnies!

I need one of those shirts saying "I'm a doctor: but not the sort that helps people".

YAY! All hail Doctor Squarebear :)
