After reading your rant, it sounds like you objections to NGE are the plot and characters, in which case I'm not going to try and convince you to like the remake. In fact your objections to NGE sound remarkably similar to my objections to Escaflowne which is nicely ironic. :)

Last Exile: Approximately half way through the show Sophia receives a summons to return to Anatoray and wanders around indecisively for at least one episode. (From memory, I think it might be Fairy Chess) Intertwined, there's a small subplot dealing with Claus' attraction to her and vice versa. Finally she makes her decision, kisses Claus and leaves. I was rather squicked by the attraction considering the age difference.
