Oh yes, I'm not saying it's easy to judge other people's inaction, just talking about deciding on the best action/inaction oneself. Also, it's just as hard to judge other's actions, which also often have complicated unseen motivations.
As a reader I've been trying not to assume that characters are white (or male or whatever) unless the text explicitly says so, it's been interesting (and then of course they mostly end up turning out to be blond or whatever)
