Oh yes, context is really important. I had a similar moment watching "Vexille", where the white American comes and saves the poor Japanese people (though in a much more nuanced, interesting and non-racist way than if it had have been an American film)

Not that context is everything, I get a bit annoyed at the "It can't be misogynistic because a woman wrote it" argument, for example.
