Via this post on craftgirl I have discovered the lovely Leslie Hall, who took the fact that she was born a dumpy dorky girl from Iowa and took it to the level of performance art: this is her running for Prom Queen (she also officiates same sex weddings!)
Overall I think that's awesome, but I realised this is not the first time I've seen someone use a neck brace as a quick marker of "very unattractive woman", see for example Bob and Cheryl Ugly from Fast Forward. I imagine this image isn't very good for the self esteem of women who have to wear neck braces for health reasons!
