Yeah, as someone with a combination of congenital, acquired and possibly environmentally acquired disabilities it makes me really fascinated that there's this constant idea of renewal and perfection. I mean, when I was at my absolute peak fitness and health, I was still medically obese - but by most measures in perfect health. Would I be different in Star Trek's future?

Jude Law's character in Gattaca always interested me in that here was a character who was renowned for his physical prowess and then had that taken away - but aren't all "correctly" created people supposed to be both mentally *and* physically perfect? Why is he depressed? Why is his life now over? Is it because the world has been made even more hostile to disabled bodies and he literally can't move around outside? Is it because the perfect mind can still be depressed?

X-Men has had lots of What If? style comics where the mutants are the majority, but they're mostly short-lived, about the mutants being Evil Dictators and not very interesting on that front. On the other hand, I've always enjoyed stories about the mutants who live outside the superhero/supervillain dichotomy - Grant Morrison had some particularly good ones, like Jumbo Carnation, mutant fashion designer.
