I really enjoyed that "Crime Against Nature" link, thank you! It would definitely have worked for me as a kid, but my favourite relaxing reading at primary-school age was the Guinness Book of Records, everything in torrents of bite-sized facts.
The Stephen Hawking article was ridiculous, and takes two milliseconds of thinking about how I'm reading the article to dismantle the conceit behind it, but I do like to think about interconnection between people, machines and other forms of technology (like food production).
