These are good thoughts. I've not read much Austen or Butler (just Pride & Prejudice and Lilith's Brood, respectively), but when I finally did get around to them I had to take a step back from exactly those preconceptions you mentioned. I didn't get very far with P&P the first time I tried it; somehow, on my second attempt, it suddenly clicked that Austen was writing satire, and from that point I enjoyed it much more. How much more accessible might it have been if I had properly understood its context from the beginning?
