Via an interesting post on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom I came accross this magazine article about praise which really struck a chord with me, the whole "If I'm smart, then either I do well without trying or am an utter failure" thing which I have seen in myself and other bright kids.

Guh. Wedding in less than a month. Utterly sick of organising, wish it was all over. Write my vows today and am thus feeling very soppy :)

And now, off to do more organising...

"If I'm smart, then either I do well without trying or am an utter failure"

try teaching 30 of them in one go...

Ouch. This is why I am glad I don't have to teach kids, just encourage them to engage with the exhibits (and if they don't well, that's their perogative)

I'm pondering showing it to my mum for my little brother, but am not sure how to do it without implying she screwed up with me :)

I would, unless your mum is super sensitive. After all, it's not like she can be blamed for following the prevailing expert opinion. Stupid experts. :P

I just hope I didn't cause my brother issues. With any luck, it's okay to tell people they're smart (or at least, not dumb) if you're trying to counter their teachers constantly telling and/or implying they're stupid. :/

I am so going to bawl all through the ceremony :)

I think there's a significant difference between "You're not dumb" and "You're smart, we expect Great Things" :)
