Good point about changing interests, but I kind of did it in reverse - I had no access to fandom or even most non-book canons as a child or teen (poor TV reception, no bookshop or cinema in town, didn't get a VHS at home until I was 16 and of course no internet) so when I grew up and got internet access and realised that not only did other people like the same stuff and wrote stories (which was called "fanfic"), lots of them were women! And queer! It was amazing! And I could access just about anything with a bit of time and effort! It was amazing to grow into childish things and I've never stopped.
