So, my work runs footy tipping, and pretty much everyone does it. Being even more sport phobic than your average nerd (seriously, I'm incredibly unco, I've come last in every athletic competiton I ever competed in) I resisted for quite a while but everyone was like "It's not like real sport. Even with random gueses you're bound to win a prize eventually. And c'mon..mathsiness!"

So, under protest, I joined in, and ranked teams based on the prettiness of their flags.

And this is the result:

And I'd be lower, but I keep forgetting to tip and so get given the baseline score of 4/8 (when I guess I tend to get 2/8. Yes, worse than random chance)

I'm quite proud of myself really :)

You know, there is a wooden spoon prize for the person who comes last :)

Awesome! Though there was one time I got 6/8 :(

Does this classify you as a Docker?

Well, my family are dockers supporters (they got into footy after I left home) So.. yes :)

I thought it was standard to get the away teams when you forgot to tip?

most comps have their own policy. either away teams or home teams are the 2 most common. some give you 0. some give you the round average (rounded down) some give you 4 aparently. I wouldn't have minded that last week. 4 was good enough to win at my workplace...

Really? That's just weird. (Every tipping competition I have been involved in or heard about before just now, gave away teams or zero)

Hmm. I don't know, just afaict I always get 4/8. I haven't been paying much attention though.

So all you need to do now is to rank teams by ugliness...

I tried that the last two times, and got 6/8 and 4/8, so it is a better strategy. Not enough to make up for all the other times though :)

My workplace tips through footytips.com.au
the one thing I find useful/anoying is that on the page you do the tips on, it has the current odds for the game, letting you know who is the favourite and by how much.

When you see a team at > $5, there's a good chance that they'll lose easily.
When both sides are under $2, toss a coin or take the home team, or tip the team that's higher up the ladder at the moment.

Yeah, I noticed that, but the only way I can enjoy it at all is by not paying attention to that stuff.

The first year I did tipping, I won (everyone had spent the season in bewilderment at the results... my lack of knowledge was no problem.)

The next year, I lost by so much that even though it had been said that missing out on putting in your tipping (resulting in a score of 0 for that week) would disqualify you from the wooden spoon, they gave it to me anyway... I would have had to have got 16 out of 8 games to not be last...

Since then I've pretty much been soundly in the middle...

Well, at least that's interesting :)

So we can pretty much conclude that to be a good footy team, all you need is an ugly flag.

Doesn't really surprise me.

Or perhaps that bad teams try to make up for it with pretty flags :)
