Has everyone tried the new google maps streetview yet? (jut type an address into googlemaps and see if it shows up as an option) Everyone else seems to be using it to look at their own homes, but I also used it to look up all the people I know who houses I haven't seen. The only who showed up was [livejournal.com profile] edible_hat. Nice digs, man(*) :)

It's bizarre that they have all the places I've looked up in Perth, but not my friend in Canberra. (EDIT: they do have [livejournal.com profile] lilysea, but that's less exciting since I still think of her as a Perth person. No offense to [livejournal.com profile] lilysea, it was still pretty cool :))

(*)Except now that I think about it, that's your old address, you and [livejournal.com profile] drucilla_death have moved out as I recall. Darnit.

You should lodge a complaint!

HOLY SHIT!

When did this happen?!
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 01:45 pm (UTC)
According to wikipedia, they started in May last year, but only extended it to Australia yesterday.

Without going into specifics, looking at the details of the photo of our house it was definitely taken some time between late last year and early this year.

The summer grass is a bit of a hint.

You can see my car! It's exciting.

Can you see your number plate though?

(You can see my car at our place, parked what looks like incredibly badly, but is actually parked that way to involve sand with sharp bits in it of death and other mess the electricians left).

:P

Can't. It's too far from the road (and the plate might be blurred anyway like with mailbox numbers).

Everyone knows my plate anyway! =p

*grins* Yeah my plates are blurred, my grandmothers number on her house isn't though.

Didn't googlemaps have issues when it came out in america about license plates and things showing?

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 01:59 pm (UTC)
They had Issues in America, yeah.

Well by looking at the building next to my work i can't see any of the reconstruction. I'm astonished by lengths they've gone to, now I have one source for looking at bush roads in the middle of nowhere in 5 metre increments.

Also, they blurred my letterbox.

It is pretty insane when you consider the scope and depth of it all.

Have also been looking at the google moon stuff, they've street viewed some bits of the apollo missions.

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 02:54 pm (UTC)
That is awesome.
Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 02:52 am (UTC)
Yeah, that was fun to play with too

My house was taken last year, my neighbour who moved then is standing in my driveway.

I'm torn between;

- wow, so impressed at the detail online!! and
- who actually wants this much detail? Trolls upgrading to stalkers? Drunks in cabs trying to find the party via their mobiles?

*Thinks* I just can't imagine how google recoups the cost of all that picture taking.

I can think of a use. There are some people who navigate by landmark. If you're going somewhere for the first time, and all you have is an address, well, this is something you could use to hopefully see what you're looking for before you go there.

It does seem like a disprorportionate amount of effort. I think we're going to have to wait and see how it all pans out to know the effects and uses.

Yeah, we moved in December/January last year. (got the keys just before Christmas, moved our stuff in 3 weeks later).

But that's my car in front of the address you looked up. It's also across the road from here (I think that one was when we went to the open inspection), in the driveway at my sister's place and in the employee parking area at work.

I swear Google is stalking my car.

Yeah, I know, it was ages ago: in my defense the only address book I could find was like 6 years old.

Is it a very pretty car?

It's an OK colour. Nowadays it's missing hubcaps (2 fell off, I took the other 2 off so at least the wheels match now) and has a couple of bumper stickers. It gets me where I want to go and is pretty reliable and efficient.
