So I've been feeling quite headachey and dumb for the last few days, and to deal with this have
(a) been trying to avoid talking to anyone on the internet for fear of saying something monumentally tactless (unfortunately I'm not always smart enough to remember how dumb I am...)
(b) Been trying to avoid doing anything which strains my eyes, ie surfing the internet, watching anime, playing th DS etc. ie everything I feel like doing.
Yesterday I had a brain wave: didn't MacOs have a text reading utility? I could get it to read me fanfic!
So I checked it out, and after much fiddling (which did not help my headache, of course, but I decided was worth it for the long term benefit) figured it out (kind of, it seems to change what counts as the "next section" pretty much at random, even when rereading the same page) and listened to a story. It was pretty weird, and I was probably only going to feel comfortable with gen (porn+ computer voice +husband in next room= mocking) but it was acceptable.
Today I woke up with an even *worse* headache (for some reason...) and was really sleepy, so set myself up in bed with the laptop and listened to some G-rated Pride and Predjudice fic. All good. That laptop's power supply is pretty flakey and I noticed today that the plug-in doohickey was a bit green for some reason but meh. And then, just as I started on the next fic, I realised that the green section was getting larger and melty and smoking. So I tried reading without sound but then the power ran out completely. Dammit.
Since I'm still to sleepy for much time out of bed, I am now reading a book. A book! In this day and age! And later I may watch some anime..with the dub. But somehow, despite these obstacles, I will soldier on.
(And yes, given my headache, I probably shouldn't be online, but I felt like whining, and it stops me making ill-thought out tactless replies to my mail. Right now every time is "Too sleepy for lj o'clock". Hopefully tomorrow I will be awake enough to steal Cam's comfy chair and listen to fic on this computer in the study)

If it makes you feel better, for a while I couldn't figure out how to skip forward which put me off anything above PG since I generally skip (or at least skim) sex scenes, and really don't relish the prospect of hearing them read out in a computer voice :)
