People: you need to RSVP for my dinner thing, if you're going to. Also, it's at 6:30, sorry I forgot to say that before. "I can't come" or "There's a 50% chance of me" are both acceptable answers, I'm just paranoid about over or underbooking. And yes, I have had more than the 2 RSVPs on that post :)

Had a very productive weekend, have put a deposit on the wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses and ordered some furniture (soon our clothes will be in an actual cupboard, all fancy like, rather than boxes as at present) Dresses from Into Camelot.

Am currently reading "The Beauty Myth" by Naomi Wolf. I was a bit worried it would be a strident polemic (I hate those, even when I agree) but while (as you'd expect) she takes a more extreme view of the situation than me (and tends to stretch her metaphors and arguments further than is wise) she doesn't hit you over the head too much and far from being anti men is if anything a bit soppy about the joy of an equal romantic partnership. I'm not sure I agree with her overall premise, that the focus on Beauty(*) is recent and the result of a backlash against womens lib, but many of her descriptions of the effect it has on women really rang true.

For example: have a listen to love songs on the radio. The ones from men to women often focus on how sexy/beautiful the woman's body is, "I love the feel of your skin" etc. But I can't think of a single love song from a woman to a man where she compliments any part of his body apart from maybe eyes. Feel free to point out the gazillion I'm missing :) EDIT: and you did. I still think it's a tendency, but one which does appear to be changing.

(*)The main aspects are afaict:

  • There is an unrealistic, unattainable (too thin, artificial) standard of female beauty
  • womens self worth is presented as directly related to their similarity to this standard, yet they are judged for being shallow/asking for sexual assault if they try to attain it
  • Uh..I forget. I may edit this post when I remember :)

I've been pondering the fact that the number of people who've friended me without being friended back keeps steadily increasing but as it is checking my flist takes longer than I'd like. Now I try to keep the rss feeds of such people in a special folder in my rss reader to be checked when I'm not in a hurry, and I was thinking "Well, there's actually not that many who update very often, maybe I should friend them all". But in the process of adding a couple I realised that the reason said folder doesn't update often was that in most cases I'd bookmarked the lj, not the rss feed.

So, to the 23 people who have friended me without being friended back: on the down side, I'm probably not friending you any time soon. On the plus side, I am actually reading your livejournal now :)

The title of this post refers to the fact that I left my name-badge at home today, so had to wear a spare and decided I liked the idea of being "Amber" for the day. It was fun, if surreal. It felt mildly stalkery to the Real Amber but I just like the name is all. (At least more than the other options, though I seriously considered "Cat")
