sqbr: A happy dragon on a pile of books (bookdragon)

Just read "1602", a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman which recasts the marvel universe into 1602. I really enjoyed it. I read the first few issues at [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood's back when it came out but it was much better having the whole thing. I do think he was a little lazy by making it focus even more on white men than the original source, that we he didn't have to write around all the restrictions put on women etc. Personally I think half the fun of period pieces is playing around with the juxtaposition between the characters worldview and our own, he did this a bit (and it was fun) but I would have liked it if he'd done it even more (how would Storm the african princess have faired, for example? Or Wonder Woman, avatar of non christian gods?)

An idea which gave me definite pause was that he explicitly states that America started with the first colonists, and that if they die americas future dies, with the native americans, to me, coming across as the people who used to live there, the caretakers until the Real Americans arrived. It's gotten me thinking about what "America" (or for that matter "Australia") really is. Hmm.

(For [livejournal.com profile] lilysea, since she missed me on the phone. Also, happy posts are fun)

Today was great. Went to [livejournal.com profile] theducks and [livejournal.com profile] lizbyrds engage-ama-christmengagement party and drove all the way there and back: over an hour for my logbook, and I didn't run over a single pedestrian! Just now my mother in law rang up to say they'd visit us for xmas to save us the drive to rockingham and I was like "No really, we don't mind" :)

FINALLY met [livejournal.com profile] flyingblogspot, who I've seen on so many people I know's ljs that I assumed I must know her, but as it turns out I didn't (but I do now) There was an amusing amount of "Do I know you? What's you lj username? Oh wow! I know you!"

Had very nice conversations on the verandah with tasty sophie friendly food *looks at that sentence. Realises it doesn't say what I mean it to. Decides to leave it as is*

On the way out [livejournal.com profile] distantcam got to show ff his manliness by helping [livejournal.com profile] dr_jekyl change a tire.

And just now we saw "The Simpsons Movie", which was fun, though I think it would have been better on the big screen. Next, episode one of Life on Mars!

Saw pilot of "Northern exposure" last night as an alternative exercise tv show to Star Trek DS9, it's actually as good as I remember, which is a nice suprise. Though Dr Joel has gone from "Cute but kinda old" to "cute but kinda young" :) (EDIT: except he was actually the same age as me. I suck at guessing ages :))
