Unspoilery thoughts: I liked it, on the whole I thought the additions to the book worked pretty well, but it sometimes sank into tacky oversexed melodrama. Also they added in too many new plot points towards the end of the season, it made for a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion.
I find it amusing that the main character, her boyfriend, and her brother are played by a New Zealander, an englishman, and an aussie respectively :) (I spent ages trying to figure out before realising: it's that guy from Home and Away!)
Also while I can see the purpose of the character best described as "The World's Most Annoying Vampire" they are indeed pretty annoying.
SPOILERY THOUGHTS (And it's a murder mystery, so don't click if you have ANY intention of watching)
I really liked the addition of Tara. She meant Sookie had an actual friend, and made Lafeyette no longer the One Black Person. Of course, then they made that one black person a drug dealer so I'm not sure it's an overall win. Definitely one of those shows where the characters are stereotypes which they largely transcend into being 3 dimensional, but it might have been nice if they were less stereotypical to begin with.
I loved Amy. I bet a lot of people from the North watch the show feeling all smug about how much more enlightened and educated they are than the "hick" protagonists, and she captures everything that's toxic and selfish about north american left liberal culture(*). (And yes,
lilysea, I did love the line "I’m an organic vegan and my carbonic footprint is miniscule so don't you dare think you can judge me" :))
As an aside I'm always amused when west australians look down on american "hicks" from the south. We're from the no-name middle of nowhere capital of a backwater state of a backwater country, who are we to judge?
As always the "Vampire bites=sex" metaphor goes to some disturbing places. I could have done without the "Being raped makes you happy but really annoying, so that the real victim here is your unwilling rapist" subtext. It would have been more interesting if it was an innocent young man, I think, though still pretty creepy. Ooh, or an older woman, like a sensible housewife with a husband and kids, that would be just as tragic. Why would they punish him with someone attractive OH WAIT because all victims of sexualised violence have to be hot *mutters*
On the one hand the identity of the murderer wasn't so OMG obvious, on the other it wasn't really hinted at all. The explanation for why she didn't pick it was done better, I think, though.
Hmm. I have a headache so will stop there. I may post another set of thoughts, I need to get it out of my system so I don't spoil Cam :D
(*)From my POV as someone geographically outside it but immersed in it to a large extent anyway

haven't seen the series, but read all the books
I know that the guy who plays Jason is an Australian actor who is gay, and in an interview he talks about how the show deals with discrimination etc. In that regards.

Oh really? I wonder if he was out while he was on Home and Away.
Re: haven't seen the series, but read all the books
I don't know, I didn't even realise he was on Home and Away (hehe).
I may well get around to the others eventually
Let me know how you think about how she portrays the Asian characters in her series (hopefully saying that in a vague way isn't a spoiler), because it really pissed me off. That and the lesbian characters. :(
Re: haven't seen the series, but read all the books
I made it 2 minutes in before the terribleness got to me :) (And of course he is completely silent in his first scene)

Oh that's something to look forward to :/
