Livejournal to make all users (or just new ones?) choose one of male or female EDIT: Possibly all a big misunderstanding

Iranian men are posting pictures of themselves wearing women's head scarves as a political statement, supporting both a male protester who the government is trying to humiliate by posting pictures of him in women/s clothing, and Iranian women in general.

Switzerland bans minarets to, amongst other things, "support women's rights" I eagerly wait the banning of church towers to support science.

Well done those men! *cheers!*

Gotta say, I'm becoming more and more impressed by the Iranian Opposition movement, and Iranian public in general, even as I become more and more disgusted at the political/religious establishment.

Shame your other two links point to such Fail. :(

I found the autiobiographical graphic novel "Persopolis" gave a really interesting insight into the culture of Iran (without being the sort of weighty non-fiction tome I feel like I should read and don't :))

I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a copy of that, definitely.

I don't think "misunderstanding" is quite the word. There are plenty of details in the comments at synecdochic's place that dissect it. It wasn't a glitch; along with the slated change in ability to not specify gender, someone deliberately wrote, in the beta code, an error message stating that an unspecific gender was not acceptable. I don't understand the tech/flow stuff enough to summarise it, but there's plenty more there to suggest that what's going on now is simple backpedalling in the face of objection.
