sqbr: And yet all I can think is this will make for a great livejournal entry. (livejournal)

Seven things meme

Since [livejournal.com profile] infamyanonymous tagged me, and it means I get a chance to ramble about myself :)

I was going to do a list of seven facts but can't be bothered, feel free to choose seven of these.

Seven of my (six) interests:

1. beading: This is here largely because I was heavily obsessed with beading around the time I set up this livejournal. The obsession has waned somewhat but I do still really enjoy making jewelry when the mood takes me. And beads are just so pretty.
2. comics: I love comics. I'm not (generally) a fan of traditional superhero comics, but love the graphic novels of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, etc. I also enjoy a lot of webcomics. And my long-frustrated desire to write has in recent years been expressing itself through the creation of webcomics.
3. equality for all: I added this as a meme a while ago (I think it was to do with gay marriage) but it is something I believe in quite strongly. I get really, really riled up about the way groups in power oppress, Other, and are arbitrarily predjudiced towards groups not in power. Racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism (not to mention more subtle stuff like predjudice against the disabled)...it all sucks. I've seen arguments that fighting for "equality" misses the point that legal equality doesn't solve a lot of the inherent biases in society etc, but until I hear about a better word for it it'll have to do.
4. maths: Yaaaay maths. I love it so. *hugs maths*
5. science fiction: You know, I should probably change this to "speculative fiction". Anyway. I had a love/hate relationship with sff as a child, since the ideas appealed to me but so much of the childrens/YA sff is like movie sff: interesting setup, but then it just becomes a thriller or horror or whatever, and all the interesting ideas are ignored or contradicted. Then when I was at 14, one of the channels showed Star Treks 2-6 and I was instantly converted. I read through all my school Star Trek books and was feeling somewhat dissatisfied..and then I discovered real science fiction (Orson Scott Card, Isobelle Carmody and Anne Macaffery, all chosen thanks to their pretty covers) and have been a total sff nerd ever since. Since then I've joined Unisfa and Swancon and found both incredibly rewarding, making good friends and having a wonderful time. I find I tend to get along better with sff nerds than I do with regular people, as can be shown by the fact that most of the people I befriended before I was 14 have ended up being sff nerds too.
6. wire crochet: This is a similar story to beading. Also I got really frustrated by the lack of resources for wire crochet online, it took me ages to even find out that's what the technique was called after seeing some and thinking "I bet I could do that if I could find some instructions". Thus I added it to my interests so others could find me, and made my wire crochet page.
7. [Remove Some] I think the reason I have so few interests is that I find long lists of interests (or favourite bands, or whatever) utterly tl;dr and boring. I much prefer shorter lists of things people like plus descriptions of why they like them, like this :)
