sqbr: She's getting existential again. It's ok I have a super soaker. (existentialism)

I did a meme on tumblr offering to do a video post on any requested subject (the other one is on maths so got posted to alias_sqbr) and was given the topic "being a queer, disabled, feminist writer". I didn't talk much about feminism in the end! I'm wearing a Kate Beaton "Brontes" shirt and key earrings (and pants. You can't see them, just letting you know they're there)

It's interesting seeing what assumptions and stuff show up when I can't go back and edit the first thing that pops out of my head eg the idea that queer fandom = femslash fanfic which is all written by women, which...no :) Also, as a kid I actually did like the idea of a husband/boyfriend being like a best friend but better. But I knew not all relationships were like that.

Transcript below the cut, there are also closed captions through the magic of Youtube. A few errors but I can't be bothered fixing them right now, sorry!

So. I've been reading this anonymous fanfic fandom discussion meme and the discussion around it with mixed feelings. On the one hand, there's some interesting discussion of a type you don't see many other places, on the other there's some really vile nastiness and Fail, and specifically there's been some nasty attacks on people I like and respect. I thought to myself "How would I feel if people said that stuff about me? Not that I'm well known enough that anyone would bother."

I started a few vague pondery posts but couldn't articulate my thoughts, what with this chronic illness that makes me too sleepy to write coherently, answer my mail or deal with much of anything most of the time(*). (Achievement for today: opened windows to air out house, remembered to close them again)

But! I just found out that I am in fact one of the the secret minds behind the meme!

I know it's just one person and I'm sure 99% of the people on the meme would respond with either "Who?" or "What?" but since it's just bizarre rather than nasty I don't mind feeding the "troll".

Lily posted a musical autobiography, I thought instead I'd try and find songs from important moments in my life which I identified with at the time. These are mostly angsty/break up songs because that's my favourite genre, and my emotional involvement with music seems to be directly proportional to how teenage and/or depressed I am feeling.

Some of the songs as a rather odd YouTube playlist.

Finally, the results of the Photo Meme. I would have been sooner, but I kept forgetting to photograph Cam and then the photo vanished! And then I waited until I could be bothered making smaller versions of the photos, and then I decided I couldn't. So these are big.

Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in - it can be anything from the house I live in to my favorite shoes. Leave your choice here as a comment, and I will reciprocate by taking the pictures and posting them as an LJ entry. That way you get to know a little bit about my life, if you're remotely interested in it.

Keep in mind: I reserve the right to veto :P And may be kind of slow...

What are odds I'd get an actual band name? (well, record label) I didn't cheat and look at any of their actual album covers before making mine.

1. Open graphics program of your choice.
2. Close your eyes.
3. Draw a cat.

I kind of cheated in that I opened my eyes without thinking during my first attempt so this is my second (I didn't think of doing the ears and head as one thing the first time) Also I opened my eyes before doing the text.

Plus I have a graphic tablet, which is probably the most important factor :)

While I'm doing memes :) I could do them with months, but I like having them all mooshed together to tell a (very odd) sort of story.

EDIT: So ok, yes, these are the subjects of the first posts of each month. Fine. Pedants :P See below for the first sentences. I like run-on sentences starting with the word "So" don't I?

Copy this sentence into your livejournal if you're in a heterosexual marriage, and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.

[livejournal.com profile] flyingblogspot and [livejournal.com profile] infamyanonymous both posted about personality type things just now, which got me thinking. I did the Myers Briggs test and as happened last time was totally unimpressed with the result (me, an overbearing leader? It is to laugh. The only bit I'm 100% happy with is the T) But this reminded me of a personality classification they were talking about on the Psychology 101 podcast, and after some digging I found it: The Big 5.

So according to that test, I am...

From [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic: Pick 10 people and give them the "you make my day" award in no particular order. If you're picked, you are charged with picking 10 of your own (unless you've already done it - in which case, I suppose you're off the hook). basking in the glow of having been chosen by such an awesome person as myself, and maybe doing to the meme if you feel like it.

With reasons, so the rest of you know how you should improve. This isn't a free ride you know! (nb I think the main criteria here was just that I've actually seen/spoken to you in the last six months)

[livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic: for making me feel special, and also for writing awesome fanfic
[livejournal.com profile] distantcam: Best Husband Ever (or at least that I've had so far)
[livejournal.com profile] mandragora2003: for giving me amazing delicious food (smoked garlic+lamb =LOVE)
[livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood: for making up for MOVING AWAY FOR NO REASON by being a great friend
[livejournal.com profile] gelignite: for putting up with me dragging her to random bead shops
[livejournal.com profile] tommmo: for answering my stupid questions
[livejournal.com profile] thanners: for not stealing my phone (rescinded if you did in fact steal my phone)
[livejournal.com profile] lilysea: For ringing me and having lovely conversations
[livejournal.com profile] kitsune_iii: For giving me lifts and inviting me out even though I keep canceling
[livejournal.com profile] stephiepenguin: for continuing to be nice to me despite my numerous flaws. Actually, I guess that's what you're all here for :)

Also an honourable mention to [livejournal.com profile] greteldragon for giving me an excuse to draw rainbows :D

The problem with these things is all the people who get left out (I eventually decided to just go with stream of consciousness and write whoever came to mind, or I'd be here all day)

It was supposed to be 20 shuffled songs but that's just too many. Also I skipped a few of the less amusing ones.

So, my playlist (in my pants):
-Finlay Quaye: Sunday shining in my pants
-The Cruel Sea- The honeymoon is over in my pants
-The Whitlams - buy now pay later in my pants
-Tracy Chapman - Baby can I hold you in my pants?
-Cruel Sea : Anybody but you in my pants
-Soundgarden: Blow up the outside world in my pants
-Pearl Jam: Nothing as it seems in my pants

Home sick again today. Am womanfully refraining from an emo post about my health.

Anyway, some things I have encountered:

Apparently I have a New York City accent. I am curious to know what people from other places-which-aren't-america get :) (Also whether not actual americans found it accurate. Gacked from Real Life Genuine American [livejournal.com profile] seaya)

Two really interesting articles about class in Supernatural (seriously, I've only watched half of season one and still really enjoyed them just as a general discussion): Masculinity and social class and Class and white masculinity in Supernatural. I'm really interested in portrayals of class in scifi, but making any analysis myself is hampered by the difference between class here and in the countries in which the scifi I watch is made. (Also, currently, sick and stupid)

Saw "Forbidden Planet" the other day, it's actually pretty good, like one of the better original "Star Trek" episodes, only as a movie with effects which are both impressive and incredibly dated, and sexism so unselfconsciously extreme it's just amusing. It's wierd seeing Leslie Nielson as a young leading man. Also: I spent the whole film waiting for the famous "robot holding prone woman" image from the cover, only to find that nothing remotely like that happens in the film :)

Going against my anti-meme policy because the result is amusing. I must admit my contrary streak made me deliberately choose some "wrong" answers on questions I thought were annoyingly worded, on the whole it has the problem you are bound to get with this sort of test, the assumption that there's an objective, linear measure of "feministness", and that there's a single correct "most feminist" response to any given issue.
so am I a feminist? )

Those "say something anonymous" posts aren't really my sort of thing, but I can see the purpose they serve.

So: feel free to ask me a question, any question. It doesn't matter how dumb. I will give a response, most likely an answer to your question unless I decide it's too tricky or I don't like it :)
Statements (about me or the price of eggs or whatever) are welcome too if that's what you feel like doing.

Anonymous posting is on and IP logging off, and you're welcome to take advantage of it if you like, but that's not the main point.

I realise that this is technically no different from any other post on my lj, but hey :)
