Home sick again today. Am womanfully refraining from an emo post about my health.

Anyway, some things I have encountered:

Apparently I have a New York City accent. I am curious to know what people from other places-which-aren't-america get :) (Also whether not actual americans found it accurate. Gacked from Real Life Genuine American [livejournal.com profile] seaya)

Two really interesting articles about class in Supernatural (seriously, I've only watched half of season one and still really enjoyed them just as a general discussion): Masculinity and social class and Class and white masculinity in Supernatural. I'm really interested in portrayals of class in scifi, but making any analysis myself is hampered by the difference between class here and in the countries in which the scifi I watch is made. (Also, currently, sick and stupid)

Saw "Forbidden Planet" the other day, it's actually pretty good, like one of the better original "Star Trek" episodes, only as a movie with effects which are both impressive and incredibly dated, and sexism so unselfconsciously extreme it's just amusing. It's wierd seeing Leslie Nielson as a young leading man. Also: I spent the whole film waiting for the famous "robot holding prone woman" image from the cover, only to find that nothing remotely like that happens in the film :)

I got New York City too.

Heh. Of course neither of us have ever heard the other speak, but I guess from that we must sound kind of similar :)

Though the thing about Forbidden Planet is that Leslie Nielsen's face hasn't changed that much since that movie was made in 1956.

I don't know, I'd say it's at least a little pudgier and wrinklier... but yes, he is recognisably the same guy.

NYC for me as well.

Mid-Atlantic. This is what everyone calls a Philadelphia accent although it's also the accent of south Jersey, Baltimore, and Wilmington. Well, everyone that lives near there, that is. Outsiders can tell you talk differently from them even though they can't tell what your accent is.

If you are not from there, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A New Yorker who, unlike most New Yorkers, rhymes "on" with "dawn"; or
(b) A Yat from New Orleans.
You are probably not from Eastern New England or the Great Lakes area, and certainly not from anywhere in the West or Canada.

You rhyme "on" with "dawn"? Freak :)

Am womanfully refraining

Also, can I just say how much that made me smile? *grin*

'tis a phrase I would love to see become ubiquitous.

Yes, everyone should use it! Even the men! :)

It's not normed for you, silly pants! ;)

I'd be interested in an oz one, if thee is one, just to see.

It's not normed for you, silly pants! ;)

That's what makes it so much fun! :)

The differences between australian accents are pretty subtle, about the only one I can pick out even a little bit is far north queensland, the absolute opposite end of the country from here, and even then I'm not sure it extends far enough as to actually change what vowels rhyme etc.

Dude, maybe you should stop drinking sewer water and eating plutonium crackers?

That was a really interesting meme. I could see how it focused in on the vowel chart. It doesn't work with Aussie too well, because of our completely r-less dialect, whereas yanks go completely nuts with rs. I got NYC, probably because they have the least r-ful dialect and influences from Brooklyn.

Dude, maybe you should stop drinking sewer water and eating plutonium crackers?

But they're so tasty :(

Heh. Yes, I can see it appealing to a linguistically knowledgeable person such as yourself :)

yep nyc.

That's interesting, because I would pick you as having a slightly unusual accent. But I guess I've already proven that there's room for quite a bit of variety within the "NYC" boundaries :)
