Yesterday I went to a rally calling for a National Disability Insurance Scheme, which later was announced to have become policy. I have no deep point to make, but it was this or not get around to posting on BADD at all.

It's the first political rally I can remember ever going to. When I was younger I had a kneejerk reaction against rallies the same way that some people from church going families do against going to church, and then just as I started getting more into activism I got sick. I must admit my understanding of the NDIS is fairly shallow, but when [personal profile] lilysea asked if I wanted to come along I decided it would be a good chance to see what going to a rally in the wheelchair is like since I could probably rely on the organisers to pay attention to accessibility. Plus, while I do ok myself, know a lot of disabled Australians have real issues getting the help they need.

The organisers were indeed pretty good with accessibility, including setting a start time in the middle of the day well after the time we were supposed to arrive (disabled people often not being able to zip about efficiently in the early morning or late at night). The same cannot, alas, be said for Transperth, the lifts at Perth train station died really quickly once they had to deal with multiple people in wheelchairs etc using them in quick succession, causing a long queue, and staff were apparently unhelpful. (And later on we discovered the joy of trying to fit more than 4 people with wheelchairs/prams etc in a train carriage)

Once we escaped the station we spent some time waiting with many other disabled people and carers in the Hay Street mall, with organisers emphasising that the police needed us to of stay in the centre so that pedestrians could get past. The few police looked rather bored, but there were quite a few photographers and journalists. A woman from the ABC asked [personal profile] lilysea and I if we wanted to be interviewed but neither of us felt up to being Representatives of The Disabled, and deferred to a more prepared looking woman. (If you see any photos of a woman with bright blue hair in a wheelchair, that's [personal profile] lilysea. I'm the more boringly dressed woman beside her :)) I met some women from a local disabled women's group [personal profile] lilysea is in, they seem very nice.

Organisers with microphones tried to encourage people to chant, but my throat wasn't up to it. I did hold a sign on my lap. We went at a slow pace as a fairly tight group up the mall, down a block towards the river and into the Supreme Court gardens. It was hard keeping a steady pace with people of all different abilities and forms of mobility (scooters, on foot, crutches etc), I ran over someone's foot :( At the gardens there were people set up to direct people towards the stairs or ramp as appropriate, which did a good job of preventing bottlenecks. Then there was a small concert, which was loud and not really my thing so I left after taking some photos.

It was an interesting experience. Even as someone in a wheelchair I sometimes found myself defaulting to talking to carers rather than other wheelchair users. But despite my best efforts I am alas not always immune from awkwardness around people with major speech impediments or cognitive disability, which many people had. Being in a large group of disabled people was kind of cool, people showing off cool purple calipers etc without awkwardness.

(Below: Three photos of a large group of people, many in red shirts, some in wheelchairs or just sitting on garden chairs, watching a band play on stage in the park of the Supreme Court gardens. It is a beautiful sunny Perth Autumn day)

For anyone not subscribed to [personal profile] alias_sqbr: I am in Melbourne for Worldcon! I may at some point be up for visitors (though possibly not :/) and if you see me come up and say hi! (If you want :))

Can Preschoolers Be Depressed?
Lots of food for thought for me about my own (utterly miserable) childhood(*) and relationship with my parents (who were great at telling me I was awesome and giving unconditional love, but not so good at encouraging an open discussion of feelings)

Women Are Not Marshmallow Peeps, And Other Reasons There's No 'Chick Lit'

That post about women in maths

Marginalized folks shouldn't always have to be "the bigger persons" A corollary that occurred to me while reading this: a really simple way to be an "ally" (as much as that term makes sense) is to always try to be the bigger person, always give the benefit of the doubt to those you have privilege over in a given context. So, for example, when discussing sexism men should give women the benefit of the doubt and be more patient/polite etc. Not INFINITELY so, but more than normal.

(*)It belatedly occurs to me there's an element of appropriation in this since I've never been diagnosed with a mental illness. But I was definitely one of those sad shy children where the teachers take the parents aside and say "Sophie's a great student, but I worry...". Hmm. Shall ponder when not about to go to sleep.

To make sure I don't not get around to posting in time, a very short lazy International blog against Racism Week post.

This morning I inadvertently came across Political Remix Video, a blog of remixes, vids, mashups etc which repurpose footage to send an opposing political message.

They don't have a lot specifically dealing with race, but what they have is definitely worth checking out.

Another site worth checking out is Sociological Images, which posts images from the world around us like ads, book covers etc and then looks at their subtext and context. They have a lot at their race/ethnicity tag.

Warning: Reading/watching too many posts from these blogs makes it hard to take any images at face value :) (also it gets a bit repetitive reading too many at once)

I left the masquerade early because I was feeling Very Crap (if I wasn't in a group I probably wouldn't have gone to the masquerade at all) and Cam didn't end up getting any good photos (here's what we have, I have a couple more from the next day to put up).

So does anyone have any? Of course leaving early means not many other people took photos either :( (Including the other Delirium)

OC and Pax as Agatha and Zeetha from Girl Genius
and most importantly
Me as Yumiko Readman from "Read or Die" (here's a reference shot. She has a magical power over books, I had to dress as her :D)

I got my hair cut today, and decided on a semi-whim to get streaks put in. Unfortunately I'm only really up to going to the hairdresser on the corner, who is ok but not fantastic, and its not quite what I wanted but I'll live with it.

It won't stay this straight for long, I'm suprised it didn't re-curl before I got home :)

Does anyone else think I look kind of like [livejournal.com profile] gelignite? Well, our hair looks similarish anyway :)

Finally, the results of the Photo Meme. I would have been sooner, but I kept forgetting to photograph Cam and then the photo vanished! And then I waited until I could be bothered making smaller versions of the photos, and then I decided I couldn't. So these are big.

VERY image heavy )

A small number of photos from Chas and Jen's engagement party.

I uploaded them almost immediately...in such a way as to break the gallery. Somehow. And then forgot to link them once Cam fixed it :)

Also: BUFFY TONIGHT. I made hazelnut macaroons!

Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in - it can be anything from the house I live in to my favorite shoes. Leave your choice here as a comment, and I will reciprocate by taking the pictures and posting them as an LJ entry. That way you get to know a little bit about my life, if you're remotely interested in it.

Keep in mind: I reserve the right to veto :P And may be kind of slow...

I and Cam just spent the weekend at Quay West Bunker Bay Resort. It was nice, if not worth whatever absurd price his company paid for the accommodation (we ended up spending enough just on incidentals like breakfast1)

Cam has put the photos up.

It was [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood and Enforced Equanamitys wedding yesterday. They got engaged before I and Cam had met and have been forced by circumstances into a long distance relationship for the past nearly 9 years, so it was absolutely wonderful to see them together at last, finally starting their new lives together. Though I will be very sad to lose [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood to her homeland :( Photos will be up eventually, but for now see this lovely shot [livejournal.com profile] distantcam took which captures the moment as the balloons went up and we got to shoot petal cannons at them (they exploded and shot out rose petals! It was awesome)

[livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood looked so pretty *sniff*

Also, rather less interestingly, have updated ACOS. From the beggining Cam has been saying he was just waiting for the enivitable moment that the comic turned into furry pron..well this is as close as you're likely to get :P (Visually, anyway, there may be mild sexual refernces in dialogue later on)

I have now run out of scripted pages for some time, I have a couple of mental scripts I came up with while drawing the last few pages, but then a disturbing gap where I know what happens but none of the specifics before I get back to stuff I've scripted. Maybe I should skip over the unscripted stuff and do it in flashback later :D

[livejournal.com profile] rescviki tagged me to do a "ten things you don't know about me" meme, but that seemed kinda similar to this meme I already did, and anyway anything NONE of you know I probably don't feel comfortable sharing with all of you.

So, ten things you may not know, which may or may not be about me.

  1. There is an incredibly friendly (and kinda needy) cat living in one of the houses behind us.
  2. His name is Whiskey
  3. I finally found a photo of our Pratchett costume group at Swancon From right to left we have Cam as Otto von Criek, me as Cheery Littlebottom, [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood as Sally and [livejournal.com profile] mandragora2003as Angua.
  4. The Rivers store in Harbourtown sells what look like quite nice socks for $1.80.
  5. It is a lovely day outside (hey, the foreigners didn't know that)
  6. Threadless is having a sale. I already bought a buncha stuff thanks the voucher [livejournal.com profile] kitsune_iii gave us for the wedding.
  7. I dyed my hair reddish brown about a week ago, it looks ok.
  8. "Pirates of the Carribean 3" is secretly a Mary Sue fanfic written by a fangirl. Who may have been on some sort of drugs at the time.
  9. I quit my job yesterday. No, not tutoring, the other one.
  10. I'm hungry and woozy. Stupid insomnia.

We're back! Basically we got bored of the country and wanted to come home, check our mail, and play with our new appliances like the pathetic, soul-less city folk we are.

That said, we had a fantastic time. Cam has put some photos up here but has yet to go through the hundred gazillion "pretty shot of ocean and/or trees"s. Becuase it was SO PRETTY. On the first day we took the "scenic route" the few km up the coast to the lighthouse on the Indian/Southern ocean border and ended up spending all our time on detours to the Oh So Pretty beachy bits.(*)

I'm such a liar. At the wedding I was going on about how I hate beaches and don't eat chocolate, yet spent the first day gleefully climbing rocks and paddling feet on a beach, and the second eating as many free samples as I could find. More accurately: I don't like beaches unless they have at least one of: islands/sandbanks that I can paddle to, interesting nature, or large smooth rocks I can clamber over. I do like, say, beaches with a natural spring going through a wetland then over a limestone encrusted water wheel, rock pools and lots of big smooth interesting looking granite rocks, with wooded hills behind and rocky islands ahead(**). It's just that when people say "do you want to go to the beach" that's not usually the sort of beach they're talking about. Also they generally expect me to swim, blech.

Also I ate very small samples. It is taking all my will not to devour the small piece of fudge I bought from margaret river.

While we were gone I gained the ability to control animals with my mind (ie we visited a birds-of-prey sancturary. It was cooler than it sounds) Oh, and the post title comes from the name of a restaurant whose menu was in the chalet we rented. We did not try them out :)

We still haven't unpacked, preferring to spend our time playing with the sewing machine.

Anyway, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the things I want to do (unpack, answer email, etc) so I may end rather abruptly right.....here.

(*)And then missed the lighthouse tour, decided it was all too much effort and instead went to the equally pretty (in a very different way) Jewel cave.
(**)The sand being in parts glittering with mica and in others red with feldspar and dotted with strange karstic structures like sandstone teeth doesn't hurt either. Heh. First year geology really got under my skin but of course my description may be way off :)

Cam has put the photos up at our gallery and Flickr.

I was going to post highlights, but there's Just So Many (really, the masquerade was amazing) So, not so much highlights as stuff involving me or that you might not realise was awesome till you had it pointed out to you. Go look at them all!

Me as Cheery Littlebottom (a dwarf exploring her femininity, pity he missed my awseome boots). Me, Phlebas and Pav as Cheery, Sally and Angua out on the town (from "Thud" by Terry Pratchett) Note Pav's beautifully made badge. I just printed mine off the internet :)
Unfortunately I don't have any shots of Cam as Otto the vampire photographer.

Elizabeth Moon in my costume!! Well, bits of it anyway.

The cast of Firefly plus their tiny evil twins (really, that's stomach bacteria behind them).

Liz in her award winning costume.

Also, I didn't end up going to it but Dance Dance Revolution looks like it was interesting.

I've been happily listening to Science Show podcasts on Eowyn (my pda) on the way to work, but feel like a bit more variety. So, any recommendations?

Went to Katies Pirate Party, it was totally brilliant. Pictures forthcoming. And yes, another example of the young guard forgoing the traditional medium of email for those new fangled hand delivered invitations sealed with wax. Pfft. These whippersnappers have no respect for tradition.

Also: Graduation pics! Including a few shots of Mesh, who graduated on the same night.

Had to do birthdays today, got myself covered in icecream cake. Was repeatedly put in the situation of being able to eat as much leftover chips etc as I wanted and then throwing the rest away. Must never do birthdays again.

I am so happy lj has notifications now. EDIT: See, and now I will notice when I am periodically friended by random strangers. *waves to [livejournal.com profile] dirtyfilthy* (Apologies if you're not actually random, not that I have a problem with random strangers regardless :))
