Because I'm an idiot I didn't get my camera until the last full day of the con so have almost not photos. But what I did get was Rob and Lise's awesome Molecular Gastronomy Hour. It reminded me a bit of Kitchen Chemistry.

The main star was Sodium Alginate. That post has the main gist, so briefly:
Sodium alginate is a flavourless gelling agent which forms a harder gel in contact with calcium.
We put a mix of cream and yogurt into unflavoured sodium alginate gel and got, well...a mushy mess. But in theory the gel covered milk balls sound cool :)

We then got a syringe of coke gel and dripped it into calcium chloride and made teeny little salty sweet balls. They needed more rinsing than we could manage so looked better than they tasted but again, the idea is cool :)

(The panel also included a comparison of banana smoothies with and without xanthum gum, but since I can't eat any of the ingredients but the banana and it just looked like banana smoothies didn't record that bit)

Swancon starts tomorrow!

-I will be all quiet-like internet-wise for a few days. I know, how will you cope?

-Both my panels are on Friday ("Casual Anime" and "Hard sf with soft sciences"), and it's only $20 entry for that day, so youse should all come. Yes, even the ones on other continents!

-My cfs means I am going to be keeping my standing/walking to a minimum, so if you want to catch up it'll have to be somewhere nearby with chairs and I may have to bail to go nap (as fashionable as standing in hallways is and all :))

OC and Pax as Agatha and Zeetha from Girl Genius
and most importantly
Me as Yumiko Readman from "Read or Die" (here's a reference shot. She has a magical power over books, I had to dress as her :D)

So, Dreamwidth is starting up soon(*).

I find it and the OTW (specifically an Archive Of Our Own) interesting (I think I have an invite for that if anyone's interested, btw). Both were formed by groups of mostly female fans(**) who got sick of being messed round by badly written and run online facilities for fandom and decided to create their own, egalitarian, professional, fan-run alternatives. Time will only tell if they work, but they seem to be doing ok so far. (EDIT: Dreamwidth is not just fannish)

They make an interesting contrast to more "male" geek open source projects etc. From my limited experience I'd say there's a lot of differences and a lot of similarities too, certainly the camaraderie and idealistic imagery. I guess fanfic writers and open source programmers both tend to emphasise a free and unfettered sharing of ideas (especially those who are both, like Naomi Novik :)).

Now I'm wondering if there's much/any fanfic written about Linux...

(*) There's a lot of broken links still, if you're interested in seeing what an actual account looks like here's one off metafandom.
(**)I'm not sure how much crossover there is between Dreamwidth and OTW. I'm sure there's some, they certainly seem to come from the same broad social group of lj based fanfic writers, but they're not formally affiliated afaict.

I've been posting a lot recently haven't I? This is what happens when I get stuck at home sick for too long :)

Went to Supanova today, it was actually pretty fun and I'd say we got our money's worth. Mostly stalls selling various geeky things, got some VERY cheap graphic novels from King Comics. Also had a good time at the actor Q&As, Jewel Staite is great and it's cool to have seen Nichelle Nicholls (although she wasn't as entertaining) Cam liked Kandyse McClure. Bumped into a few people (including a middle aged woman from weight watchers I would not have pegged as a StarGate fangirl), admired the costumes.

So, I reccomend it it to anyone who has $20 and a bit of time to spare tomorrow, details here. The food is terrible though (long lines for overpriced crappy hamburgers etc), bring your own.

Also, wasn't sick! Which is no guarantee I won't be sick tomorrow, but still!

EDIT: Pictures! Read more... )

I keep seeing posts like this and then losing them again, so a (currently pretty sparse) compilation of all the useful-looking (to me) social-advice-for-geeks I've seen and can think of right now. I'll add more stuff if I think of it/am linked it.

Not all of these are explicitely "advice", but I think the important factors are (a) Talking about issues of social interaction and (b)largely being aimed at the people they're complaining about, ie not a woman ranting to her female friends about a particular male behaviour.

Also, note that I don't neccesarily agree with everything in all of these, but they are least thought provoking.

Reading the feminist sff carnival which has lots of interesting links. Reading this one about how amateur RPGs are even more unimaginateively conservative than commercial ones I was struck by how deeply cool it would be to have a Tamora Pierce RPG ("The Song of The Lioness" or maybe one of the later ones with a party of young people whose powers work together(*)).

I've only managed to stop myself trying to make one by remembering how quickly my "The Colour of Magic" NWN module went up in flames.

On a related theme, Part 3 of this essay on "And we shall March" has some (imo) really cool ideas for how Alan Moore could have used the Golliwog in LoEG:The Black Dossier. Parts 1 and 2 talk about where golliwogs and minstrelry etc come from and their history (not a pretty place), part 4 is a bibliography and Part 5 talks about what Alan Moore actually did with the goliwog (bad things, apparently)

Something I am fascinated by is the idea of all the really cool stories that don't get told because our blinkers make us incapable of seeing they could ever exist. I have nothing but admiration (and envy) for the writers who tell these stories, as a reader I love that that moment of seeing the world from a different perspective you didn't know was there, like the best of science fiction or theoretical science (well, it's the same feeling to me :))

(*)Ooh! Or a Planeteers one! Ok, I'll stop now :)

So I've read a bunch of online fannish arguments where people go "These sorts of fans are crazy" and give examples, and then talk about the way fans should actually think, and end up conflating "Crazy fans" and "People whose attitudes are rational, but different to mine". And I had thought about where one should draw the line.
Some of these things are not like the others... )

Cam has put the photos up at our gallery and Flickr.

I was going to post highlights, but there's Just So Many (really, the masquerade was amazing) So, not so much highlights as stuff involving me or that you might not realise was awesome till you had it pointed out to you. Go look at them all!

Me as Cheery Littlebottom (a dwarf exploring her femininity, pity he missed my awseome boots). Me, Phlebas and Pav as Cheery, Sally and Angua out on the town (from "Thud" by Terry Pratchett) Note Pav's beautifully made badge. I just printed mine off the internet :)
Unfortunately I don't have any shots of Cam as Otto the vampire photographer.

Elizabeth Moon in my costume!! Well, bits of it anyway.

The cast of Firefly plus their tiny evil twins (really, that's stomach bacteria behind them).

Liz in her award winning costume.

Also, I didn't end up going to it but Dance Dance Revolution looks like it was interesting.

Back from Swancon. which was great as always. Photos will be up at some point. I'm feeling rather spacey due to lack of sleep and too much chocolate, but also very bored, I've gotten used to being able to wander out of my room at any time and finding something interesting to watch or do. Maybe I should watch the two fanvid dvds I was given.

My two panels ("Fanvids" and "The Science of Time Travel") went pretty well, thanks of course in part to my co-panellists but mainly to my incredible genius. Got to wear this shirt (see icon). Elizabeth Moon wore my helmet.

I have a bunch of ideas and questions about feminism, fandom, and the con, but they will have to wait until my brain stops being goo.

Ok, all the recent talk about gen on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom has inspired me to go through what gen means to me and why I like it. This will be of absolutely no interest to anyone who doesn't read fanfic (and possibly not even then), sorry to the majority of my flist but I had to post it somewhere and my lj seems the best place for self indulgent ranting :) Though you will get to "see" me say the words 'sex' and 'porn" more than I probably have in all my other blog/lj posts combined.
Eww, is this a kissing book? )

So, there you go. Sorry I rambled on so much, it's the only way I know how to communicate! Feel free to tell me what I'm saying makes no sense or is deeply offensive, chances are I'll realise at least half of it is wrong. Also, I apologise to anyone who thought this was going to be about why I like Jen(*), but that's so self evident it doesn't need a livejournal post :)

(*)Or Genevieve, who none of you know and doesn't read this. She's pretty cool too.

I was discussing this with Cam: what are the good (or at least halfway interesting) science fiction epics? By which I mean long, somewhat mythic stories with a sense of history and gravitas. All I could think of was Dune and the Gap series (which I never finished due to Stephen Donaldson reaching my "sympathetic portrayal of rape" limit)

Kind of: The Xeelee Sequence and the Foundation Series and Worthing Saga.

EDIT: I'm rather tired and getting all confused in my definitions, so feel free to ignore my qualifiers and mention anything you think deserves mentioning.

[livejournal.com profile] gyges_ring has reminded me of semi-epic books which are painted on a large canvas but aren't very mythic or whatever, more like reading a historical novel set in the future e.g C J Cherryh's Union/Alliance books. I realise this is a very subjective thing, and don't think there's anything wrong with a prosaic tone.

Also: A Fire Upon the Deep (how could I forget?)

And thank heaven for Wikipedia (not all space opera is the sort of epic I'm talking about, mind you). *ponders investigating these authors*

I've been thinking about the separation of ones real life from online and fandom lives, and how I just don't do it. This is partly inspired by a couple of posts on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom (I got around to actually typing it out as a comment on this post then realised it was Way Long).
Don't tell anyone I'm here! )

Though the change from "I don't like it, with these exceptions" to "I like some of it but have very high standards" isn't a huge paradigm shift.

Warning: Sleepy and grumpy, will almost certainly revise this after I've had time to realise which bits of it are stoopid. Sometimes you just have to let your ideas go out into the world knowing they'll almost certainly come back battered and changed. And now, I justify my patheticness )

People who didn't attend are allowed to read these too :)

From the "rant for five minutes on your favorite book" panel. I've definitely forgotten some, tell me in the comments and I'll add them. It's worth keeping in mind that someone loves each of these books, and just becuase I didn't doesn't mean you won't.

Also, Atomic rocket.com (seems to be down, possibly wrong url) from the science panel, and on the off chance Kylie Ding reads this, Sierpinski crochet, googling finds better examples, unfortunately I can't remember where I got the pattern.

Ok, I'm a big old nerd. I love conventions, and fannish discussions, and all that. But one thing that has seemed to separate me from many of my fellow big ol' nerdish brethren (especially many of the ones most involved in conventions and discussions) is the fact that, well, I just don't like fanfic. On the one hand this has made me a little sad, and a little out of place since I still find myself interested in the sort of discussions going on at [livejournal.com profile] metafandom etc, but on the other hand deep down I get to feel ever-so-slightly-less-patheticly-nerdy.

But no more. I have found my nerdy weakness, and it is fanvids.

[livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood first introduced me to them (in fact she makes her own(*)) but for some reason the anime stuff just doesn't do it for me. And then I saw a fanvid of all seven seasons of Buffy to "The William Tell overture"(**) and had to see more.

Except I didn't know where to find it, so after some fitfully fruitful googling gave up. And then I read this post on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, and then I discovered...[livejournal.com profile] the_reel. And then my fate was sealed.

So, as inspired by said post, here are all the fanvids I have seen that I really, really liked (hmm..turns out I do like some amvs after all).

Also, yes, still sick but less grumpy. Have compiled a list of suggested activities for work, not as good as I could have done were I well but hopefully good enough.

(*)Ooh! She's using my design! *ponders turning it into an lj-icon* EDIT: done!
(**)Also, looking for this I found the original unaired Buffy pilot, yay!

Not sure how long I can be bothered doing this, but I'm writing this on my new pocket p.c. She's beautiful...

Yeah, that's enough of that.

EDIT (from Gandalf) I might as well mention our naming strategem.

  • Gandalf/Shadowfax (the computer and it's second hard-drive): My computer, a slightly old but for it's time powerful mac. Replaced Pippin, who was smaller and much more pathetic.
  • Arwen: Cam's shiny laptop, with her potable hard-drive Aragorn
  • Eowyn: The new ppc (becuase she's small and spunky but not as powerful as she thinks)
  • Saruman: The big windows box
  • Galdriel: The server (was previously Gimli, who was small but powerful and lived in the dark)
  • Feonor: The printer
  • Palantir (I think): the airport (I was quite proud of these last two becuase I'm a sad Tolkein fangirl)
