With the last two years results for comparison.

1. What did you do this year that you'd never done before?

2006: Wore a mortar board :) Got an actual job (of sorts)

2007: Got an actual actual job! With a desk and regular hours and pay made of real money!

...oh, and got married :D And did, and then passed, a driving test!

2008: Wrote fanfic :) Went to femmeconne. Had acupuncture.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

2006: I don't make them, but I did a fairly good job of being the person I was trying to be.

2007: Exactly.

2008: See above

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

2006: Noone close, but a couple of people I kind of know.

2007: Off the top of my head, same answer.

2008: Ditto

4. Did anyone close to you die?

2006: The closest was my Grandad Ray.

2007: Thankfully not, this year. (I think. God, did I forget someone? I hope not)

2008: See above. Someone on [livejournal.com profile] cfids_me died a few days ago but I don't think we'd spoken.

5. What countries did you visit?

2006: Ha, I barely even left the metro area.

2007: Singapore and Malaysia.

2008: See 2006, though I am about to go on a trip to distant exotic Dunsborough :)

6. What would you like to have this year that you lacked last year?

2006: Better health. My license. A job that pays more than peanuts. A husband :)
I feel pretty happy of my chances for all but the first.

2007: So... it'd have to be better health then...

But yeah, life is actually pretty good. Can't ask for much. My knees and reflux are under control pretty much, too. (Although, you know, better would be better)

I hope to get ok at sewing, I guess. (So far: I adjusted a pillow case. And it functions as a pillow case! Better than before, even!)

2008: Did I mention better health?

7. What dates from this year will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

2006: None. My Phd submission and graduation are etched in there, I just don't remember exactly what day they happened :)

2007: Honest to goodness, my first thought was [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood's wedding. (It's been nine years. And she had two!)

But um, yeah. Our wedding I guess :) Also my driving test, guh.

2008: The american election. Being asked to stop coming in to work, and then walking into town feeling emo.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

2006: DOCTOR SOPHIE WILL KICK YOUR ASS!!!

2007: Mrs Dr Sophie, licensed driver, will KICK YOUR ASS!!! (Or at least run it over)

2008: Will you all laugh at me if I say "my fanfic"? But really, not much. It hasn't been that kind of year. I was quite happy with my race&feminism panel at Femmeconne, and the resulting notes and links and stuff, it was an experience putting it all together.

9. What was your biggest failure?

2006: Hmm.. the most I can think of is my utter failure to care about a paper my supervisor would like me to make out of my thesis. I just don't care enough.

2007: Well, I very nearly failed my driving test. That's blotting out everything else.

2008: This question is too depressing

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

2006: Man, I've seen this meme on 3 other people's ljs and we're all sick as dogs. For me it was reflux, and discovering the joy of orthotics (though that was more acknowledging a problem I've been ignoring for years) Also the generic sickliness that is me.

2007: No worse than last year.

2008: HAHAHAHA. Yes.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

2006: Eowyn, my shiny shiny pda.

2007: Faramir, my ipod.

Also the Wii.

2008: Hmm. Guitar Hero? Did we have that last year? I really like Guitar Hero.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

2006: Did I mention I got a Phd? :)

2007: Did I mention I got my license?

Also, YAY NO MORE LIBERALS. So, the australian voters :)

2008: America. Comparatively speaking.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

2006: Many world leaders etc. My 10 year old brother getting onto WOW :) (Just found that out today)

2007: Whoever killed Benazir Bhutto :(

2008: God, I forgot about Benazir Bhutto.. Um. I dunno, people in general I guess. On the internet, you know? And stuff?

14. Where did most of your money go?

2006: Apart from food, multiriders etc, probably the wedding and physio/reflux medication.

2007: Wedding. Medication. Driving lessons. Overseas holiday. Computer. Treadmill. Umm....

Good thing I got a shiny new job to pay for it all!

2008: Recently, acupuncture.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

2006: Starts with a P, rhymes with "thud"

Heroes. Fanvids.

2007: Starts with "W", rhymes with "bedding".

The election. (Sorry to go on about it, hypothetical remaining liberal voting flisters I haven't alienated already, but I was)

2008: I dunno. Femmeconne?

16. What song will always remind you of this year?

2006: "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. "Oh Yeah" by End of Fashion, it's part of an exhibition at work and they replay the first 30 seconds OVER AND OVER

2007: Bogroditze Devo.

The song to which I walked down the aisle :) (I think. I get the vespers mixed up. But they'll all do it)

2008: I'm really not sure that any are particularly associated with this year. The first thing that comes to mind is the Quantum of Solace parody song :)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. happier or sadder?
2006: Way, way happier
2007: Probably happier, but I wasn't exactly sad then either.
2008: sadder. But I was pretty happy, I'm not that unhappy now all things considered
ii. thinner or fatter?
2006: Probably slightly thinner, I gained a bunch during the end of thesis dash
2007: Fatter :( Hopefully getting thinner!
2008: You know I'm really not sure, I haven't weighed myself in ages. If clothes are any guide maybe a little thinner.
iii. richer or poorer?
2006: richer, slightly
2007: Way richer.
2008: Way poorer. Still a bit richer than in 2006, I think.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

2006: My comic. Spent time with family and friends. My knee exercises :)

2007: Man, I remember when I made a pretense at doing my leg exercises..

Anyway, um... exercise in general. And yeah, comics and people-time.

2008: Oh, wow, leg exercises, that takes me back. Um..looked after myself, taken time off work when I was sick, I guess.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

2006:Feeling crappy and/or being sick. *ponders* Actually I'm pretty happy with what I've done with my time, all up.

2007: Eating. Wasting time online...

2008: exercise and work (they seemed like a good idea..)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

2006: Just got back from lunch with my mum, dad, cam, 3 siblings, sisters bf, uncle, grandma, and random guy from my parents church. I feel ill but happy :)

2007: Was with my family, sisters bf from last year (seriously, I thought they broke up like eight months ago....but what do I know) brothers gf, brothers gf's cousin who doesn't speak much english (but was still pretty cool), shiny husband. More vegetarian food than last year but otherwise much the same.

2008: With my family. Watching my mum try not to poison me with gluten :) Not sure what combination of siblings SOs and random strays my mum brought home we'll be eating with this year...

21. What LJ users did you meet for the first time?

2006: [livejournal.com profile] violetsquirrel and the other unisfa freshers. [livejournal.com profile] capnoblivious, [livejournal.com profile] okuninushii, possibly others that don't come to mind.

2007: Hmmm. [livejournal.com profile] flyingblogspot. [livejournal.com profile] thanners. Um....

2008: [livejournal.com profile] indescribble, [livejournal.com profile] aphd3l, probably some other Femmeconners but they're the ones who friended me :)

22. Did you fall in love in 2006?

2006: Nope, just stayed that way :)

2007: Same, only now it's all formalised and stuff :)

2008: Much the same, how boring are we? :)

23. How many one-night stands?

2006: None. Well, there was that one time.. actually, no.

2007: Ha.

2008: And again, ha

24. What was your favourite TV program?

2006: Heroes

2007: Still Heroes. And then...oh! Read or Die. Or Full Metal Alchemist.

2008: Damn you Heroes for breaking my heart. So, um...Middleman?

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

2006: Hate, no. There are people I didn't like that much I like less is about it.

2007: Same.

2008: Yep, same.

26. What was the best book you read?

2006: I'm not sure. I liked the Temeraire books. "Forever War" was great too.

2007: Hmmm..... You know all I can think of is Lust Over Pendle, but I know there were others. "A brief history of nearly everything"?

2008: Not objectively the best, but I think I enjoyed "The privilege of the sword" the most. I read a lot of really good books this year, actually.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

2006: I can't remember any. There probably were some, but none recently.

2007: The joy of going back and buying all the cds I was too poor to get in the 90s, like Tricky.

2008: Would you believe Pink? Some of her stuff is actually pretty good!

28. What did you want and get?

2006: Let me think...oh yes. A Phd.

Also a date for the wedding (at LAST), a job. Socks for xmas, etc :)

2007: A husband! And a license!

2008: The dress

29. What did you want and not get?

2006: A reasonable income.

2007: Skinniness and a resultingly behaved digestive system.

2008: All of the above plus any resemblance of health and an active lifestyle

30. What was your favourite film of this year?

2006: Off the top of my head, "Children of Men"

2007: Hmm. The Great Dictator? Wait, no, Stardust.

2008: Iron Man

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

2006: 27. Worked :( But later that week I went out for dinner with a bunch of friends which was heaps of fun.

2007: 28. I honestly can't remember! I did have a birthday party a bit later though, which was fun.

2008: Played Guitar Hero :D

32.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

2006: Not getting sick so goddamn often. Being able to eat all my favourite foods. (Oh, ok, so I can still eat some of them with no problems)

2007: I hear you 2006 Sophie. I hear you.

2008: 2008 Sophie is laughing at 2006 and 2007 Sophies bitterly.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?

2006: I put much less effort into clothes than I usually do, I was a bit distracted. I've started trying to buy more clothes new and a bit classier. But otherwise much the same as usual, flowing with blues reds purples and blacks.

2007: Corporate. (For me. So not very corporate at all, but less actively bohemian)

2008: I bought lots of nice t-shirts (long and short sleeved)

34. What kept you sane?

2006: Cameron *hugs* Not doing my goddamn thesis anymore.

2007: My husband (teehee :)). Also cutting down my hours.

And NO SMALL CHILDREN NO MORE. Yay!

2008: Cam, definitely. And..myself I guess. Pulling myself out of feeling (too) sorry for myself.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

2006: MMm. Mohinder. Also David Krumholtz.

2007: Yeah, he still wins.

2008: He still wins even though he's covered in scales.

36. What political issue stirred you the most:

2006: Not sure, they all kind of blend together. Something the howard government did I'm sure :)

2007: The election for sure.

2008: The internet filter, aboriginal communities. Plus american stuff.

37. Who did you miss?

2006: Hanging out with unisfans, I guess, now I'm not so UWA based.

2007: [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood :( :( :(

2008: WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood??? Actually, I chat to her more online more than I see most other people. So: pretty much everyone.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

2006: The people at work, they're all pretty cool.

2007: New job, same reply :)

2008: Alex from work.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned this year.

2006: Not being nice to people you don't like is very empowering.

2007: Being middle class is not as empty and unsatisfying as I had been led to believe.

...but sometimes it's worth earning a bit less if it makes a positive difference to your life.

2008: You have to change your expectations to suit what you can achieve, and if you do it's remarkably satisfying.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

2006: It's hard to think of any. Hmm....

I've paid my dues -
Time after time -
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face -
But I've come through....

(They play this at work too :) )

2007: It's a nice day for a white wedding

2008: I look like I live in a coma...
HIde out in the dark when it's summer
I never go out in the sun

Cool! A fellow Max Sharam fan!
Thursday, December 11th, 2008 07:51 am (UTC)

Thursday, December 11th, 2008 06:00 am (UTC)
2008: WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME nico_wolfwood???

I'm sorry but I had to go!

Also:
Actually, I chat to her more online more than I see most other people. So: pretty much everyone.

It's bizarre that we talk more online than you see people every day. *ponders the community building effects of the net* I still feel like I don't talk to you enough though.
Thursday, December 11th, 2008 07:58 am (UTC)
Same. I just don't talk to anyone enough (Well, I've seen [livejournal.com profile] mandragora2003 a bit recently which has been nice. But I certainly don't feel like I've reached saturation :))

"2008: God, I forgot about Benazir Bhutto.. "

Typical, just because she was female and not white!

Benazir no doubt quickly faded from your memory, shuffled off with all the other occasions of brown people killing other brown people in dirty far off lands you don't care about unless they are full of resources you can plunder to maintain your elitist lifestyle.

Your prejudices are really sickening Sophie. :-p

14. acupuncture? It's been suggested to Sami (by medical professionals) that acupuncture might help her shoulder; would you recommend your acupuncturist as being good?

26. Have you tried Havemercy?

30. \o/

14. Well, he didn't do me any good :) He might be worth trying, though.

26. No. *googles* Hmm, not sure it's my sort of thing.

30. :)

EDIT: Also [livejournal.com profile] flyingblogspot may have a rec for an acupuncturist?
