So, a common thing people do on lj is to post lists of statements about unnamed people on their flist ("You're awesome", "I wish you were dead" etc). What ends up happening is that everyone tries to guess which ones are about them but of course the poster won't say.

I thought about doing a list of statements so vague that between them they covered all a hundred or so of you, but it got a bit mawkish and dull. Instead, I've made a list where each statement refers to exactly one username on my userinfo, and you have to figure out who is who by logical deduction.

Hopefully it should be do-able but noone should be able to tell who everyone is without some thought/research. Some may be wrong, but that just adds to the challenge :)

1) Since this is the first clue I needed a simple statement which uniquely identified one person and this was too perfect to pass up. So, don't take it the wrong way, and I still think you're super cool and stuff but..as far as I can tell, you're the oldest person on my friends list :D You won 3rd place for being Buffy.
(EDIT: it belatedly occurred to me this was a bad choice of question for a number of reasons, so I've changed the clue but not the person. So now it's really easy....if you know them or can be bothered doing a bunch of clicking :))

2) I've met you in person one more time than (1).

3) I was glad to hear that you and (2)'s dogs joint holiday went well :)

4) Ah, I'm sure you weren't that mean to (3) at school.

5) I am really glad you introduced me to (4), even if you weren't actually the first to do so :)

6) Huh. I see you've friended (5), I didn't know you guys knew each other! (Yeah, ok, so I probably did, but hey)

7) You're a lot of fun, it's a pity (6) can't make it.

8) I'm glad you bugged me into joining (7).

9) I haven't figured out who you are yet, but the fact you've friended (8) is a major clue.

I thought about making it more complicated and interconnected, but that's a lot of work given that there's no guarantee anyone will bother trying to solve it. I still think 3 is too easy but I always end up making this sort of stuff WAY too hard so maybe that's for the best.

I thought about screening comments, but there's too many clues that if you don't know you can't figure out. So it'll have to be a joint effort :)

EDIT: I'm not sure people are thinking about (7) the right way. Also two of the guesses so far have been right! Not saying which, since they were rather vague guesses :)

I could be (3). Don't think I could be any of the others, and I don't think I'm necessarily (3).
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 09:49 am (UTC)
You could always be (6) or (2) :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 10:21 am (UTC)
I could be (6), I guess ... I wonder.

I'm ruling out (2) on the basis that there's no way you have an accurate count of the number of times you've met me in person!

And I'm now ruling out all the other numbers, because you didn't just raise them.

Hmm, (3) or (6) or ... innumerated.
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 11:23 am (UTC)
Actually, no, I specifically mentioned those two because they could refer to anybody :) (Though now that I think abut it, (6) can't refer to any of a number of people like [livejournal.com profile] stepham with small friendslists populated with unsurprising people and if nothing else (2) can't refer to people like (9)...)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 09:55 am (UTC)
I might be (1) if nothing else Ive only met you once, but Im not sure about me being super cool. I am old though :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 10:14 am (UTC)
I'm older than you and would kill to be labelled super cool (and stuff) :-)

EDIT: But I've just checked properly and I'm definitely not the oldest on [livejournal.com profile] alias_sqbr's flist :-(
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 11:30 am (UTC)
So, having checked, do you have any guesses about (1)?
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 11:58 am (UTC)
Not really. There are a couple of mutual friends there whom I know to be both slightly older than I and definitely super cool, but also dozens of people I don't know.

BTW I checked lj profiles for DOB which is why I know [livejournal.com profile] wolfhound was born in '74 whilst I'm a 1970 vintage.
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:58 pm (UTC)
Hah. Yes. 1970 is still way too young, let alone 1974 :)

(Also, you are still cool even if you are a whipper snapper)

*has sudden blinding flash of revelation about where the name "Whipper Snipper" came from*
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 11:29 am (UTC)
Not to spoil anything, but while you are pretty cool I actually have no idea how old you are :)

*founds out how old you are*

Dude, that is totally not old :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 11:54 am (UTC)
Hmmmm. Am I (37)?
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:26 pm (UTC)
No, 25, near as I can reckon, unless you lied on your Facebook :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:07 pm (UTC)
At a very long stretch of guessing, would 4 be distantcam, 6 nico wolfwood, 7 mandragora2003, 8 gelignite and 9 delicious irony?

Very long stretch, given I'm not too sure who half the people in your flist are :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:23 pm (UTC)
You got one absolutely correct.

One of the remaining people is a correct answer, but not for the number you gave :) I know who [livejournal.com profile] delicious_irony is though it did take me a little while to figure out (not as long as [livejournal.com profile] bunny_m), and the fact she'd friended people like [livejournal.com profile] gelignite did help a lot. And it is absolutely true that [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood got me to join [livejournal.com profile] mandragora2003 in Singapore for her wedding but [livejournal.com profile] gelignite couldn't go. Just because it has absolutely nothing to do with the correct answer doesn't mean it isn't brilliant :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:45 pm (UTC)
*laughs*

I told you it was a long stretch! :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:38 pm (UTC)
I have a dark suspicion that I fit the bill for number 1... at least a quick glance at your friends list didn't reveal any obvious Unisfans of earlier vintage.

:)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 12:51 pm (UTC)
*blinks*

*realises I have absolutely no idea how old you are, and you otherwise fit it perfectly* So for all I know you may actually be the correct (1), although I had someone else in mind :)

*changes the definition to exclude you, no matter how old you are. Haha!*
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 06:59 pm (UTC)
Yes, well, Buffy would be a bit of a stretch even if I did do costumes at all. :)
Thursday, January 10th, 2008 12:42 am (UTC)
I didn't say it was for dressing as Buffy :) (Though it looks like none of the three people who would have recognised the reference read my lj any more, so this question is a lot harder than I thought it would be :/)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 02:43 pm (UTC)
I couldn't guess any of those mainly cos I don't alot of friends as often as I'd like to .
Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 12:06 am (UTC)
Oh, I specifically wrote it to include people from all the different social groups I know, that's why it's proving equally difficult for everyone :)

Impossibubble.

Looks like :) I was once asked to design a puzzle for under 12s at Scitech, and it was so hard the staff couldn't do it. (I sent it on the UWA to use as a challenge for bright highschool kids)

noone is two words
Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 12:38 am (UTC)
Actually, "no one" may be two words but "noone" is one word (it's pronounced "noooo-neh" and means "a persistent stalker"). It's not a real word, but that's never stopped me before :P
