No more basic accounts

To anyone who was thinking about signing up for a basic no-ads lj account....you can't. People who signed up before March 12 can keep them/switch to them, though. So the only free new lj accounts are the "Plus" ones with ads.

Thought people might like to know, it was hidden pretty well in the new policy statement and added to the FAQ without fanfare, I only found out off [livejournal.com profile] metafandom.

If you're using the right browser (read: Firefox) with the right addon/s (Adblock plus, etc) you don't even see the advertisements.

Well, yes, although apparently they have suspended people for doing that (Don't worry, I won't dob you in :))

Ah timing, I'd *just* signed up for a new basic one the day before!

This is quite sad. One thing in lj's favour imho was that the basic accounts so suited non-geek, low income people wanting to participate in online culture without as much spam and expectation of networking along RL class/age lines. Well, that and the shiny, shiny icons.

*Is always thinking about online cultures re: access issues and cultural capital*.

Well, they can still do that. I don't think Plus accounts are that bad from what I've seen, it's a fairly standard level of spammy adness for a website (compared to say a webcomic etc)

Not that that isn't an interesting point in general with sites with premium content etc (including lj). Hmm.
