Investigating a local celebrity

So tonight at 10:30 on 9 is a Crime Investigation episode about the Birnies, the serial killers who worked from my childhood suburb of Willagee. Awesome :)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rescviki for the heads up!

Also: Persuasion 8:30 ABC. Two real time broadcast tv shows in a night, freaky!

I didn't hear about them at the time, despite them being arrested a year or so after we moved in (I was only six, though), and when a friend later told me about them to scare me I thought she was making it up. I didn't find out about them properly 'til I started going out with Cam and his mum was like "You lived in the serial killer suburb?!" :D

And thank *you* for the heads up. Husband can add to his startlingly extensive knowledge of local criminals who've spent time in Freo Prison.

When we moved to Willagee my uncle told me that he Birnies lived in the street behind us. When I found out that they're actually over the Winthrop side I was heartbroken.

Somehow I don't see that working on you :)

Awww shucks

You're making me blush. Remember how I said CB was the reason Mum wouldn't let me use the Myer Garden City toilets on my own as CB tried to abduct a girl from there once? Found out something interesting earlier this year.

My Dad's medico mate was on holiday and Dad did his Canning Highway practice locum. The receptionist buzzed him one day and said "You're next patient has had to cancel. She's been arrested." The patient's name?

Catherine Birnie.

I worked there! I wonder which bathrooms. I love the Birnies - and serial killers in general.

The ladies *8) According to Mum she was in there and chloroformed a girl. Fortunately the girl's mother saw her going down the escalator with her.

When Sarah Spears disappeared I used to go out on to the balcony of Dad's Wellington St apartment and see camera crews up and down the street. Made me shudder. Paul Treasure went into shock one day because the taskforce phoned him up. If you were between 21-30 and a single white male they interviewed you.

I always thought Paul Treasure might have had a thing for blondes...

I really enjoy watching this program (I don't mean for that to sound as sick as it does) but if you watch it long-term you could easily come to the conclusion that WA is the serial killer capital of Australia: The Birnies, The Kimberley Killer, that nutjob in Claremont, Eric Edgar Cooke.

Did you know that the other woman on there last night is a PLC old girl? It took years for PLC to shake off the moniker of "Prostitutes Last Chance".

I always thought Adelaide had more of that...

Someone should find out. Adelaide's are definitely infamous: Snowtown and The Beaumont children. My friend Alanna grew up in A and every time she went out her mother would say "Be careful, remember what happened to the Beaumont children".

I m guessing Adelaide has more victims and we have a higher incidence of killers.

Really? Well I guess we were taught entrepreneurship and self confidence :)

It probably didn't help when those year 8s tried to sell porn of themselves a few years ago :D
