I just had a train of thought I have pretty much every time I take a sick day:

Man, I don't feel that sick, maybe I could have gone in to work after all. I suck.
Hmm. Hungry. Out of food1. Maybe I should wander to the corner shop to get some supplies.
Hmmm...no. Don't have the energy. Have to stay hungry.
Maybe I could watch some dvds.
Actually... no, that's too much effort too.
*fall asleep2*
*wake up, repeat*

(1) My definition of food narrows pretty significantly when I am unwell
(2)Yes, yes, smartie pants, am not actually sleep blogging. But that's the usual gist.

See, the thing is? You don't feel so bad at home because you can rest and take care of yourself, etc. Whereas if you went to work you'd get sicker.

Trust me, I nearly killed myself with "I'm sure I can manage it..." once. Yes, I managed to keep going. I also got steadily sicker until I nearly asphyxiated on my own bronchitis, saw my doctor, and got a reaction of: "... here is some medicine, go to bed, stay there for a week OR ELSE." And it took me weeks to get over the bronchitis and months and months to get over the damage to my respiratory system.

Whereas now, I get sick, I react with: "oh noes I am sick". I stay warm, I drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritiously, and rest. And I get better quite quickly, and don't nearly die of a cold.

Oh, absolutely. I'm actually on a very strict "If I feel sick I go home" policy at the moment, after feeling guilty about taking a week off, and going in, and thus getting sick for another week, and then feeling guilty and going in, and then being sick for another week..and then going "Sod this for a lark, I am staying home until I am really better".

The thing is, my health issues are largely invisible and not generally that unpleasant, they just make me sleepy and stupid (and nauseous) It used to be that when I got sick I got sick, which was a lot more unpleasant but at least I didn't feel like a big faker. (On second thoughts..I prefer the current situation. Guilt doesn't make your nose look and feel like big raw tomato)

I find it slightly suprising that we need to have ads ("I have the flu *cough, cough* pass it on") telling people to stay at home when sick.

When you don't get paid sick days (I do in theory, but I used them up) it's very tempting to just go in and soldier on :)

Also I had reflux, which isn't contagious.
