Via [personal profile] hl: Here, let me mansplain slash to you..

Wow. And thus I have some vague understanding of how "exotic" peoples feel when anthropologists write books about them.

Brief description: A male evolutionary psychologist "explains" slash as this weird anthropological oddity, making it sound like he stumbled on it and figured out it's significance all by himself. Said significance being: it's a way for straight women to fantasize about heterosexual sex but as an equal. Also the fact it's monogamous is NOTHING like "real gay sex".

Oh that's awesome, we have the same layout so your text doesn't move between my rlist and your post.

Ugh, evolutionary psychologists bring shame to both anthropologist and biologists, and those that straddle both fields. Truly. Real, reputable, modern anthropology is nothing like that, and the concept of evolution in biology is way more complicated and less deterministic than what they use.

I'm just... embarrassed by proxy.

I'm an evolutionary biologist and I have the same problem. <cringe>.

Uh, hey, I'm going to try to be unselfconscious about this, but:

I just followed the link back to your profile and I would be really interested in reading you, so I'm subscribing. I hope it's OK!

No worries (as we say around here). I'm using the Shiny! New! of DW as an excuse to expand and modify my circle of acquaintace myself.

That is probably the best thing I have ever watched. There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than watching someone try and patiently explain why women who like slash are strange and unusual, but not commenting on the faux-lesbian mainstream pr0n at all. It's like... Christmas!

It is my personal belief that regular orgasms can trick the female body into believing it has fulfilled its biological imperative... if that happens to involve role-playing with a Manly Warrior I will not judge you.

*suddenly visualises [personal profile] sqbr's husband being a Manly Warrior*

I... no

scuse me while I go purge my mental cache before it actually gets up to doing that in some kind of sex-based or orgasm-related context, kthx

He's a lovely man but OH GOD NO I CHERISH MY BLANKET IGNORANCE OF THE SEX LIVES OF MY FRIENDS

...you're judging!

If, by "judging", you mean "reluctant to visualise anyone I know in a sexual context", yes, yes I am.

*and* dressed up!

I'm glad it's not just me who has trouble realistically visualising him doing that.

clearly he should get together with the woman who thinks that any woman who has heterosexual sex is being raped. i think they'd cancel each other out.
Monday, May 4th, 2009 09:45 am (UTC)
Those women are amateurs. I've read pamphlets by women who say that it's rape AND reinforcing the Patriarchy if one woman penetrates another - with fingers, even.
