Where are all the men bloggers? (via a bunch of people, but it's just so awesome I had to share)

When I look around my Google Reader feeds, I see so many insightful, intelligent political and technical blogs by women, but hardly any by men.... Is it just that they aren’t interested? Do they not have time what with all the sports and drinking and porn? Maybe they don’t feel up to handling tough subjects, or perhaps the conversational style is offputting to them?

Similarly, looking through general fandom places like [community profile] metafandom or Fandom Wank I don't see a lot of men, even in the discussions of "masculine" subjects like sports. I guess it's true what they say...there are no men on the internet.

As a follow up to Mindblowing SF by everyone else:

Two recent counterexamples to common responses to complaints about under/mis-representations of women/POC in sff:

"It's just that women write differently to men!": Apparently I Write Like a Girl . Bev Vincent is told that as a female writer they clearly don't understand how men act or think. He is not pleased.

"It's just the nature of the market, nothing anyone can do": A New Look for ‘Liar’ The whitewashed cover for "Liar" is replaced by one with a character of the right ethnicity after much public censure online and from the author.

Also This is why Science Fiction can’t have nice things is a good post on the whole thing.

Via [personal profile] hl: Here, let me mansplain slash to you..

Wow. And thus I have some vague understanding of how "exotic" peoples feel when anthropologists write books about them.

Brief description: A male evolutionary psychologist "explains" slash as this weird anthropological oddity, making it sound like he stumbled on it and figured out it's significance all by himself. Said significance being: it's a way for straight women to fantasize about heterosexual sex but as an equal. Also the fact it's monogamous is NOTHING like "real gay sex".

Reading the latest round of [livejournal.com profile] metafandom there's some discussion of Fanlore and other fan wiki. Someone said the unrestrained squee on Fanlore makes it less useful which I was unsure about.

Looking up the cast of the awesome Leverage I couldn't find much on Aldis Hodge (playing the wonderfully geeky Hardison) except on the Leverage fan wiki. But, well, this isn't actually all that much more useful, Fanlore probably should avoid this sort of thing :)

The first 2 minutes of this sketch exactly captures what my conversations with [livejournal.com profile] mandragora2003 were like when I was working at Scitech. It was uncanny :)

(Now of course, it's much the same but at least my life isn't as much fun. Yay?)

I love the tone of this article: Chimp planned rock attacks on zoo visitors.

Aww! Look at how ingenious his plots are to kill the zoo visitors! And see the sociopathic calm with which he prepares his weapons! Isn't nature inspiring?

I also like the way chimps disprove all those fluffy ideas about animals being too simple and pure for war and cruelty. I saw a doco once where one chimp cheerfully beckoned a park keeper (with whom he had an established relationship) over while his friends snuck around the other side to bring him down (the keeper outsmarted them, but geeze)

Really it's the same sort of anthropocentrism that leads to people arguing that animals don't have love or real language or whatever: humans being a special kind of nasty is still us being special.

So Cam and I are looking into buying a house. We first met a guy from Mortgage Choice. He was kind of weird.

We then met a woman from Aussie Home Loans, who was much nicer and suggested a much better sounding loan.

Just now Mortgage Choice guy rang up and asked for Cam. The entire point of his call? To figure out how to format a broken memory card.

I'm pretty sure one of the rules of salemanship is not randomly ringing up potential customers and asking them to do you a favour.

According to Cam it's one of the hazards of telling people you're a computer programmer. Which is unfortunate, since he hates helping people(*). Luckily while having a pure maths major got me lots of random "Omigodgrouptheortyishardandmyassignmentisduetommorrow" emails at uni it's not so bad now :) (That and I learned to say "Sure I'll help you, I charge $30 an hour")

(*)Well, helping them with their computers :)

So you know how I spent ages angsting about making a fan comics community, because none existed? And then made one?

Well it turns out there's been another one around since June :)

Mine: [livejournal.com profile] fan_comics
Theirs: [livejournal.com profile] fancomiccentral

They have quite restrictive posting guidelines though so I don't think I would have been happy if that was the only place to post. They also have a nice backlog of strips to read :)

In the process of thinking about what I might post there I was reminded of the very talented [livejournal.com profile] astridv (check out her profile for links to her stuff) and from there came across this cute vid of SGA credits in the style of House.
