sqbr: pretty purple pi (I like pi!)

So, for anyone who reads fanfic but is unaware of the imbroglio, there has been a lot of discussion around an amazingly racist Supernatural RPF Big Bang fanfic using the Haiti earthquake as backdrop for pretty white boy sexing.

That link has lots to look at, note the ones with asterixes in particular.

But two that I think make a nice pair of points:
This Is Not JUST about Writing Characters of Colour about how it's only the VERY racist fanfic that gets this level of criticism so people should stop whining that "writing non-white/POC characters is SCARY because people will yell at me"

Itys (oh the hue and cry) This is about the silencing of POC/non-white people, which isn't my struggle to ramble about, so it informs the rest of this post more obliquely. Still, definitely worth reading.

So Cam was watching Supernatural and I had my headphones on listening to music instead. But he knocked on my shoulder "This is actually pretty good." he said. Yeah..guess how long that lasted.

I happened to see five minutes of the latest Supernatural episode over Cam's shoulder and it was quite efficiently..Supernaturalish.

So in general I've found Supernatural Season 4 so consistently and absurdly sexist it's often like watching a hilariously wrong parody. This episode took this to it's logical conclusion, it's like someone wrote a deconstruction of the show and sneakily disguised it as a regular episode.

I watched the first 5 or so minutes of this episode then stopped and went to Cam.

Me: I need to know if this episode is going to piss me off as much as I think it will.
Cam: Which one is it?
Me: Well, it starts with a beautiful blonde woman who is viciously bludgeoned to death by her husband for no apparent reason. And now it looks like it's all the fault of an evil woman.
Cam: You are going to have to be way more specific.
Me: It's an evil stripper.
Cam: Let me look it up....Oh that episode. It goes somewhere interesting, trust me. You should keep watching.

And I did, and then I went "OH. I remember hearing about this one. Hee."

So after one too many awesome vids about Supernatural Season 4 eg the spoilery but awesome A Charming Man (not to mention Cam's constant squee(*)) I decided to give it a go. I'm actually enjoying it so far (one episode in) but I am really glad I'd been spoiled enough that I was prepared for (a)the summary of Season 3 to be one long litany of violence against women(**) (b) every single female character to turn out to be evil or at least punished for their self confident sluttiness. (Apologies if this counts as a spoiler, but like "All women are whores" for Dollhouse, sometimes it's better to know these things)

On the plus side, the parts of the show that don't involve women (eg Dean's unexpected ressurection) are pretty awesome.

(*)since he's in it for the cool ideas, not the hot slashy menz :)
(**)At least to start. There was some violence against black men and even some white men in there eventually.

You looks so cool in vids, and irritate me so much when I watch you.

Inspired by this Supernatural vid (which made me want to skip to season 4) and this fan trailer for season 5 (which reminded me why I stopped during season 2. Who needs Women's Work to highlight the portrayal of women..)

So, I was annoyed by the lack of female roles in Supernatural Season 1. They all seemed to fit into traditional gender roles in a really limiting way, and none had any agency. But I was told Season 2 had some good female characters, specifically Jo and Ellen. I got the impression they were actually demon hunters themselves, which seemed like a nice change from victims/demons.

*WARNING: Vague but important spoilers follow for Season 3, mild for season 2*

First: I recently read "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" by Atul Gawande which was quite good. It's a book of essays on surgical error: what happens, how it happens, the consequences (both personal and wide ranging) and what can and has been done. He goes into the positives and negatives of the culture of medicine as well as telling more personal stories, it was really interesting and I reccomend it to anyone involved in medicine (especially surgeons!) though I don't know how similar the australian system is to the american.

Second, I watched season one of "Supernatural". I watched the first few episodes when it was on tv but found it a bit too scary and wasn't engaged by the monster-of-the-week format. Cam eventually got into it and told me there was an interesting plot later on, but I was still put off by the fact that the premise isn't my sort of thing: you know that nothing will happen which permamently changes the basic formula of two brothers alone, moving from place to place fighting bad stuff. So there's huge limitations on where Sam and Dean's lives and relationships can go, and there's no chance for a real ensemble cast with complex unpredictable plots, which is my Thing.

And I didn't think it was that original. (nb I am feeling pretty zonked, but if I don't write this now I'll forget)

EDIT: While we're talking theft of lines, from supernatural ep "Something Wicked" (paraphrase)
Dean: Has this thing struck before?
Sam: Yes, in Ogdenville, North Haverbrook...
