Sexual Harassment by a stranger

This poll is for (and written by) [livejournal.com profile] emma_in_oz, who doesn't have a paid account. It is, as it says, a poll about your experiences with sexual harassment by people you don't know.

It'd be cool if you could fill it in regardless of gender or whether or not you know [livejournal.com profile] emma_in_oz. The original context for the poll is this post Emma did asking about people's experiences.

This poll is about being sexually harassed on the streets by people unknown to you, not about other sorts of sexual assault involving people you know etc.

You don't have to answer any question that makes you uncomfortable. If you feel uncomfortable with your name being displayed next to your text entry answers, skip those questions and either post an anonymous comment or fill in your text answers in the anonymous version of the poll.

[Poll #1119475]

Anonymous text answers version (an inefficient cludge added later since you can't edit polls):

The only person who can see the answers to this version of the poll is me. I'll post the de-identified answers below every now and then. I don't get notified about results so if a long time has passed and I haven't done it post an anonymous comment reminding me :) Please still still fill in the check-box etc parts of the poll above!

[Poll #1119795]

What do you think motivated them? Why would they behave like this?
I'm really not sure. Weird fetishised power trip?
Insecurity, not thinking, cultural background possibly...

How did you respond?
Got embarrassed and left the situation as quickly as possible.
Differently in different situations, when followed home I ran, when flashed I used what I thought was (probably withering/demeaning) humour.

Is there anything (possibly about yourself) to which you attribute being harassed/not being harassed?
Not remotely intimidating looking? But not really.
I was dressed for work (suit and blouse) on both occasions. Avoided major harassment due to confidence and caution?

Any inaccuracies etc should be blamed on me, since I did fiddle with the original draft quite a bit (ie adding an "other" option to everything, that seems to be a good idea in all polls :)) EDIT: crap! Forgot an "Other" option for "male/female, have/haven't been harassed". Apologies to anyone that applies to :(

I suck at answering my email and Emma may not have subscription to this post's comments turned on, so you're probably better off directing any deep discussion back to her original post. This really is her post after all, I'm just hosting it :)

I would be more inclined to reply if you turned off the fact that everyone can see our answers.

Yeah, I can understand that

That's just for the text ones, right? I must admit I didn't do those myself! (I might later when I don't have a headache) Unfortunately, afaict the only way to hide who wrote what for those is to make the whole thing a private poll so that only I (or me plus emma, or whatever) can see any of the results, which somewhat defeats the purpose.

Would you feel comfortable doing the non-text ones? *edits post to suggest anonymous commenting and/or ignoring questions*

I thought making the results private just turned off listing who voted what, while leaving the aggregate results public?

Really? Huh. *will try that*

EDIT: Nah, then noone but me can read the text entries at all, including emma. Better to leave it public so that those who feel comfortable sharing can, and everyone else just ignores those questions and answers in anonymous comments.

Ah, the text entries, good point. My comments only really applied to the ticky boxen.

And "by a stranger"? Did I miss that bit of the discussion?

That came from Emma's original version of the poll, so ask her :)

I ran the title etc past her so I assume that's what she wanted. (From past poll experience I decided it was better to be unambiguous and ask a more narrow question than to end up with a whole bunch of "I didn't vote because I couldn't figure out if you meant..." comments)

Thank you for doing this for me.

Would it be helpful to make it anonymous at this point and then post deidentified comments later?

Hmm...yeah, maybe. If people wouldn't mind me reading the answers (since I could see their names)

*checks post with glasses off and sure enough, noone but me has commented on it*

*edits both posts to say I will post de-identified versions of the second set of answers*

Do you want to post a link to this post in your lj? So far it'll only have been answered by my friendslist, who aren't quite the same as yours.
