I keep seeing discussions about this on tumblr, and have a Theory about how it relates to age. Apologies to people over 55, I realise you are not a monolith :)

Via [personal profile] woldy I came across [community profile] tenwomen and found it a little surreal, since (having counted now) I may have only written eleven non-drabble fics with female protagonists since January, but that's out of thirteen stories total (and the other two are m/m and m/m/f).

Maybe I've been in Dragon Age fandom too long and am just used to female protagonists being the norm! Anyway, I am curious about other people now, not just about the number of female protagonists they've written but how many stories in general. Thus, a poll, and to make it more inclusive I haven't made it just about fanfic.

This isn't meant as a "Wow you people who find making ten fanworks about women hard are weird and bad" thing, you can't help what you're drawn to do and we're all different. For example, I failed pretty badly at [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc and [livejournal.com profile] 12films_poc (though they were instructive and rewarding failures) and I'm sure a lot of people manage both challenges without trying. I just find it interesting.

I've been pondering how to do polls about various things in a way which minimises people feeling excluded or otherwise misrepresented. And I think the easiest way to test those ideas out is make polls and see what people don't like about them!

First off, nationality. As was pointed out to me the last time I tried doing a poll on this topic, just because I've lived in the same country my whole life and fit comfortably into it's majority culture doesn't mean other people's identities are so simple. It struck me that asking where people are currently located is a much less ambiguous question though of course you have to be careful not to then make the jump from "geographic location" to "national identity" in the analysis etc (especially since people might be on a three day business trip or something :)).

So! Please do this poll and then tell me anything about it that bugs you.
Where are you?? )

Since I just made a post and belatedly locked it, leading to at one person going "I clicked 'Read More' and it won't let me! :(": anyone want on the locked post filter who isn't? All it'll require is your immortal soul agreeing to my very reasonable policies.

If you don't want on the filter but are sad about the post: sorry! It wasn't that good anyway.

Some stuff I've figured out while designing polls online (specifically on lj clones). This is not about Real Scientific Polls, which one hopes are designed with Real Scientific Ethics etc in mind. I'm still figuring this stuff out, so please tell me what I've missed/screwed up etc.

I guess overall the most important thing I've learned: Never make people feel excluded, even if it messes with your data a bit. You're not doing Proper Research here anyway. And unless your poll is on a locked post and you know your flist really well, don't assume everyone taking it cisgendered/American/Western/straight/young/etc.

Specifically, unless it's a joke question always have an "other" option, and where possible use checkboxes. That way people who fall between the cracks of your questions (and there'll always be someone) have a better chance of finding an answer that better describes them.

There's been much discussion about the absurd gender bias in the hottest 100, which I've been somewhat avoiding until I got around to listening to the recording I made (Though thanks to the east coast time difference I still have to listen to 100-80 and 50-30 ish, luckily the website has streaming for the next few days)

Anyway: 2 out of 100 with female vocalists, and (I think?) 4 with women in the band is pretty pathetic. I looked into my iTunes library and out of my 230 five star songs, 58 have female vocalists(*).

I was inspired to make a poll of other people's favourite songs with female vocalists(*). I've always wanted to try out Google forms :) It's a bit dodgy, but on the plus side the only effort I have to go to collate the results is pressing "Sort column" :D Is there any better (and equally low-effort) way to make this sort of poll?

I'm not really interested in discussing the whys and wherefores because I really don't know (or care, to be honest) that much about the music industry. Go check out Was the Hottest 100 Of All Time sexist? asks Triple J’s Hack or any of the other posts on the subject. Also purrdence has another aleternative poll.

(*)I don't know about you, but I don't pay enough attention to who's in a band to know which ones have women in them unless I can hear them singing.

I looked back over my twitter feed today, apart from the replies to other people's tweets I could be adequately modeled by an AI which spit out an equal mix of geek links, tv comments, and health complaints.

EDIT: Forgot to say, this would be every second Wednesday

Thoughts on my birthday

So, after completely failing to find any buffets which are both Sophie AND vegetarian friendly(*) I had a good think about where I wanted to go for my birthday, and decided I was still really, totally stuck on the idea of buffet. Specifically lunch at Jetty's.

But since this is going to put off a lot of people I thought I'd find out just how many of you wouldn't be able to make it, so I can ponder a second get together you guys can come to.
This is making me hungry... )

So Cam has the full ten seasons of Stargate SG1, and I decided I felt like watching some of it. Since the episodes tend to be fairly stand alone and of variable quality I looked up the best 50 episodes and sorted them (see below poll) and then thought it would be nice to use this as an opportunity to see people, since it wouldn't involve me having to go out or talk much and thus is less prone to the "me getting sick and canceling" effect (of course, since it's at my house, me canceling is a bigger deal)

Edit: I live in Bayswater, walking distance from the Bayswater trainstation (though it's not a very short walk)

I was thinking three-four episodes, probably starting at about 6:30 on every second Wednesday night, people provide their own dinner with the possibility of arriving earlier and making a combined order of something. Episodes divided up so that people can miss a night and not miss the end of a cliffhanger. Anyone got any suggestions along those lines?

Reading this post about the controversial decision to delete posts on Boing Boing and the fact I just made a post I've had to edit several times based on people's comments got me thinking about (EDIT :)) editing blogs.

Here I'm talking just about personal blogs like this lj, not proffesional or semi-profesional/famous ones like Boing Boing.

EDIT (heh): My brain turned to mush just as I was finishing this, so I'm still not going to express this well, but: I've conflated "What you do personally" with "What you tend to think other people should do" and "what you think is an objective minimum standard for blogging", and of course these are not always the same thing (such an objective standard may not even exist). Also I should make it clear that while I do think there are certain basic standards of behaviour I would expect from most bloggers (e.g. not changing your posts and then lying about it) on the whole I think people have a right to run their blogs how they like (though I think it's good to make your policy clear if there's confusion)

When is it ok to edit a post? )

So, gay marriage is slowly making ground in America. Good for them, I say.

Now most of the people I've seen say anything against it are homophobic conservatives, and their arguments aren't worth even mentioning. But another objection (which I found difficult to understand at first but have gained more sympathy for the more I think about it) is that expanding the definition of marriage to include gay couples ignores the larger problem with their society (and ours too) focussing so much on "marriage" and ignoring more complicated partnerships, ie the law tends to assume that spouse = coparent = romantic partner = next of kin = co-owner of house etc.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that the best thing to do would be to remove "marriage" as a legal state and have various legal partnerships/relationships to do with next of kin, sharing of assets, childrearing etc, with the default being the same as the current legal marriage. What do people think? Am I missing something? I was inspired by the posts Why this queer isn’t celebrating and intersectionality and the stickiness of it all.

(nb the first question is just for calibration purposes :))

[Poll #1206670]

I realise this may seem like an odd position for me to take given that I'm in pretty much 100% mainstream marriage myself, but the fact that it happens to be the right thing for us doesn't mean I think everyone should be shoehorned into it.

A panel idea I've been batting around for next years Swancon is "Anime for people who don't like Anime" (and even if it doesn't become a panel, I think it would make for an interesting post and discussion). But in order to do it, I need to know what it is people don't like about anime, in order to find anime which avoid those things.

The first part of the poll is divided into two, one for anime fans and one for non-anime fans. If you're on the borderline, feel free to do both.
The second part is a few films I've seen suggested around the place or think people might like, but are not unqualified recommendations.

Note: disliking over the top violence etc is different to not minding it but not liking it enough for it to make up for an otherwise crappy show. Also, you can see the results of the polls you didn't take by clicking on the "Poll number blah" link.
For non-anime Fans )For anime fans )For everyone )

This was very checked together: I see no point trying to craft the perfect poll without more data to get the questions right. Feel free to make suggestions in the comments.

I should mention that I'm mainly aimed at people who don't mind anime in principle but have high standards and tend to dislike a lot of the stuff they get recommended, or don't know where to start. People who hate all of it are probably better off as they are!

Also, in the poll I only mentioned a few films each from Hiyao Miyazaki and Satoishi Kon, but they're both totally awesome and worth a look. In my opinion, as an anime fan :)

So, I've always had a certain amount of interest in women's rights, but always felt a bit put off by feminism for reasons I couldn't articulate. I eventually decided to dig a bit and either get over it or figure out what the problem was. In the process I've become convinced of two things:
(a) I am a feminist, and feminism still has a lot of important work left to do
(b) There are a bunch of things I don't really like about the feminist movement as it actually works

And I got curious about you guys experiences and identities.
So is you a feminist? Huh? )

So, [livejournal.com profile] sonnlich posted a link to this interesting article about the way menstruation is still a pretty taboo subject, even though a lot of guys probably wouldn't actually freak out if women brings it up. So, a poll.

Nb: when I say "mention" I just mean in vague, non-gross terms like "Crap! Out of tampons" or "Ow. Cramps", not going into icky detail. The same way one might talk about having gastro or a runny nose.

[Poll #1164560]

Inspired by someone at work talking about how much she hated them, followed by me and another workmate trying to convince her of their awesomeness and me realising I hadn't had any since I left home. So I made some (with chicken and peas and gravy) and they were tasty. And Cam had never seen them before outside of "Ramsey's kitchen nightmares"! He thought they were a kind of dessert!

I am having to stop myself cooking Cam "Toad in the Hole", since while I'm pretty sure he would really enjoy it it's like the ultimate anti-diet-food (sausages cooked in (crunchy tasty) fatty batter, served with tomato sauce)

Mmm... now I'm hungry again :)
