(I already posted these to [tumblr.com profile] sqbr if you follow me there)

Tumblr:

Trans woman gets sick of transphobia on tumblr, tumblr CEO is awful about it

Worldcon:

Report on the leaked emails where the English speaking side of the committee cheerfully created political dossiers of the nominated authors based on their own projected ideas of what censorship the Chinese government might want, without feeling the need to talk to the actual Chinese people on the committee, do any real research, actually read the relevant books etc. There's been some criticism of this report itself being biased/inaccurate but I don't know of anything better with the same info.

Mary Robinette Kowal talks about similar bad behaviour she had seen from Dave McCarthy previously

Results rigged to exclude Chinese authors. This really underlines how ridiculous it is to blame literally everything on Chinese government interference, as some people still insist on doing. In what universe would they exert pressure to have less Chinese authors win awards?

Tangential but feels broadly relevant: How creators and works from New Zealand/Aotearoa were more subtly excluded at the Wellington Worldcon. This isn't equivalent to the outright censorship of the Chengdu Hugos, but it's an example of how this culture of exclusion is not a new thing or just a reaction to a "bad" foreign country.

Dream Boy And The Poison Fans (Transcript) The connection between Xiao Zhan, the actor who played the lead in The Untamed, the AO3 getting banned in China, and the related back-and-forth of fan-groups attacking each other. ffa has some folk who blame him/his management a lot more for what happened (and some who fiercely disagree), I am way too ignorant about China to weigh in but it's all very interesting.

Beyond Authenticity: the Spectre of Han Hegemony On the simplistic discussions around Mulan.

China bars media coverage of Disney's 'Mulan' after Xinjiang backlash.

To me it feels like a lot of Western companies have this overly simplistic, and often racist, idea of what it means to Appeal to Chinese Sensibilities, and end up alienating everyone. I've been getting into Chinese web-novels lately (specifically The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, the m/m fantasy novel that was adapted into the Untamed) and even just from that can tell the situation over there with censorship and social attitudes is really complex.

I know I’m late The author of 'Love, Simon' talks about how being put in the 'problematic straight person profiting from queer experiences' box made it incredibly difficult and painful to navigate figuring out and being open about her bisexuality. 'Own Voices' is all well and good but people apply it in overly rigid ways that end up hurting marginalised writers who don't fit the narrow expectations on Diverse Writing.

A Dirty Pun Tweaks China’s Online Censors: in response to internet censors, chinese people create and share an "inoffensive children's song" about a "grass mud horse"..which uses puns to be (a)Obscene and (b)Criticise censorship

Here's the original video (as far as I can tell) *restrains self from making a comment about the gendered nature of the language* nb "harmony" is code for "censorship".

Here's another, from the article and I'll totally ignore the point of it to say it's very cute, and I found the chinese rap and animation interesting.

It's also really interesting to see how the Chinese Government uses cracking down on pornography as an excuse to censor everything. Not that any other governments would ever do that *cough*
