My next Prompt: "the characters from a fandom, in steampunk gear..Pride and Prejudice! Or Temeraire".

Unfortunately, the only characters I can think of good in-character steampunky ideas for are minor ones like Wickham or Mr Bennet, though the idea of regency steampunk is really interesting in general. But I was inspired to make a picture of Lady Catherine and Miss Anne De Bourgh which I think came out quite well. Now that that's out of my system I might be able to draw someone else. Maybe I'll give Temeraire a go instead. And of course there's [livejournal.com profile] black_samvara's prompt, which I *am* inspired by, I just have some details I'm nutting out.

EDIT: Wait, I just noticed the sentence "Or as cats". HMMM.

Looking at 18th century vs 19th century technology (P&P was written around the turn of those centuries), I decided the main difference was how unfinished everything looks, since they're just figuring things out as they go along. So I decided to try to get that across. Also it was fun mimicking the art style of the time. I accidentally scanned the image in at a really low resolution :(

I recommend not looking too closely sat the workings of the carriage :)

Despite being drawn in such a light, happy style, this is quite chilling. Especially if you know the characters, it's just so plausible.
*brrrr*

Everything I draw is in a light happy style if I want it to be or not :)

But yes, thinking about the elements of steampunk, I decided the dystopic, horror elements fitted with the time much better than the bright shiny science-of-tomorrow aspects.

I love that she's a disembodied brain (with a bow!)

That was the central image that inspired me :) Because, I mean, does she actually have any dialogue? As I recall she just sits around being sickly and unsociable. *feels a certain amount of fellow feeling*

As far as I can recall - no! she has no dialogue, she has no dialogue at all! (to the tune of "Yes! We Have No Bananas)

I like how all the references from the novel work equally well if she's actually a brain - in fact the might work better. I can see Lady Catherine doing the whole "Anne would have been a brilliant pianist if only her health had allowed her to learn" line while petting this glass bowl with a bubbling brain in it...

I know, it fits perfectly!(*) I was pondering a follow up, where Lady Catherine and Mrs Darcy encourage a young Anne and Darcy to "play" together, but I got skeeved out by the whole "Small girl's brain in a jar" thing.

It also got me thinking: how old is Anne? Darcy is 35, and if they knew each other as children she can't be that young. Maybe nobody else will marry someone so old and likely to not carry an heir which is why Lady Catherine is so desperate.

(Yes, ok, I admit it, I spent part of yesterday afternoon writing a happy ending for Anne de Bourgh in my head. Shut up, we sickly girls need to stick together, and I was trying to wash the image of a small girl in a jar out of my head)

(*)WAIT: I could draw that scene! That way I get Darcy and Elizabeth but also at least one Steampunk element, AND some humour. Thankyou, distant muse :)

I was going to point out that Darcy could have been 15 and Anne 2 and they would still have been considered 'children together' but (if I remember correctly) the actual line is "we discussed the match when they were in their cradles" so yes, they would be close contemporaries I'm guessing.

Oh, that makes her *really* old. No wonder Lady Catherine is desperate for him to marry her.
