[community profile] access_fandom is running a fanworks fest about disabled characters.

Ponder prompts! Suggest characters they've missed! (I couldn't think of any :))

So, I've been feeling bad about not doing all the Fanart prompts: not skinny youngish white people but I think at this point it's time to admit defeat. Apologies to those whose prompts were left unfilled.

I have a New prompts post for me to practice interesting poses, if people are interested, and if you're quick and can make your old prompt fit I'm happy to give it a go (one of the issues with many of the ones left was I couldn't find any decent reference images and ran out of inspiration to do the extra work required to work without them)

I was also inspired to write some fic about Toph and Teo inventing Braille and installing ramps, because that's my idea of wish fulfillment.

[personal profile] pippin suggested four different characters for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (NOT THE SAME AS THE MOVIE AVATAR) and having watched the show it is pretty much made for this challenge: it's not just set in an alternate East Asia (thus making all the characters non-white, even if not everyone seems to have noticed(*)) the characters cover a variety of ethnicities, ages, and body types, and several of them are disabled or scarred. It's also made of awesome :)

PROMPTS OFFICIALLY CLOSED.

The last time I asked for fanart prompts I came to the horrible realisation that I had no idea how to shade dark skin and went on a quest to draw more dark skinned characters until I got better.

That worked out pretty well, but there's still lots of other holes in my repertoire (I can't get my own body shape right, for example). Beyond the fact this limits me as an Artist, it also contributes to the invisibility of those outside the "default". Fans of these sorts of characters are pretty neglected fanart-wise!

So, I'm looking for prompts for fanart featuring characters who are as many as possible of:

  • darker skinned
  • have non-stereotypically european features like epicanthal folds or an afro
  • overweight
  • under 16 or over 40 (ish)
  • visibly disabled or scarred etc.
  • Otherwise outside the physical norm for (fan)art in a realistic way (no centaurs :P(*))

Final fanart prompt: The time Gregor had the north tower demolished with a gravitic imploder lance for [livejournal.com profile] black_samvara

The passage from A Deeper Season (a great Gregor/Miles AU):

"...there's a gravitic imploder lance downstairs in the armory."
"Really?" Ivan said, diverted. "I've never seen it."
"Not the public armory."
"Has it ever been used?"
Gregor coughed. "Not for, uh, traditional combat." Ivan waited.
"I, uh, had them use it to demolish the old clock tower," Gregor admitted finally.
"Really? And you didn't let me come watch? How was it?"
"Most satisfying," Gregor said reminiscently.

And yes, I based the tower on the UWA clock tower, because why not :D I spent ages trying to get it to work as a more complete picture (with backgrounds, other figures etc) but it refused to come out, so I decided to stick with something simple.

The lance is a combination of things (including some very helpful suggestions from the fine folk at [livejournal.com profile] lmbujold), but mostly ended up being based on vehicle mounted lasers from this page.
The uniform is based on various historical and modern russian uniforms, especially http://community.livejournal.com/vintagephoto/3448919.html and http://www.daylife.com/photo/07Brg7uezX1Fs
And finally I took the Vorbarra crest from this page (the fanfic explicitly says the colours are silver and black)

Talking with [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood I was inspired to illustrate a scene from Pride and Predjudice using the same steampunk setting as this picture. Now I've gotten Darcy and Lizzie in the picture I feel more satisfied the prompt is complete.

Of course now I'm going to imagine Anne that way every time I read them book :) Drawing the first picture got me thinking bout her role in the book and what her future might hold, and while I was looking for reference pics I found proof that I'm not the only one :)

Airship from here, aren't they cool?

My next Prompt: "the characters from a fandom, in steampunk gear..Pride and Prejudice! Or Temeraire".

Unfortunately, the only characters I can think of good in-character steampunky ideas for are minor ones like Wickham or Mr Bennet, though the idea of regency steampunk is really interesting in general. But I was inspired to make a picture of Lady Catherine and Miss Anne De Bourgh which I think came out quite well. Now that that's out of my system I might be able to draw someone else. Maybe I'll give Temeraire a go instead. And of course there's [livejournal.com profile] black_samvara's prompt, which I *am* inspired by, I just have some details I'm nutting out.

EDIT: Wait, I just noticed the sentence "Or as cats". HMMM.

Looking at 18th century vs 19th century technology (P&P was written around the turn of those centuries), I decided the main difference was how unfinished everything looks, since they're just figuring things out as they go along. So I decided to try to get that across. Also it was fun mimicking the art style of the time. I accidentally scanned the image in at a really low resolution :(

Main reference pictures:

I recommend not looking too closely sat the workings of the carriage :)

Next prompt, for [livejournal.com profile] elaran: rodney has a child attached to his leg and teyla looking all fondly upon him and ronon and sheppard loling

Made much easier by the images on this page, since pretty much every other image I could find has them all looking so serious.

Also, I got my drabble, yay! (It's the second one down)

[livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow's prompt.

I realised early on this would take me FOREVER if I was all finicky, so I was rather slapdash. I think it came out ok overall though some bits are completely wrong (the perspective on the balcony for example)

I think my reach overcame my grasp a bit with this prompt, especially since I started feeling really sick and stupid shortly after finishing the pencils and inks.

Still, for [livejournal.com profile] greteldragon: Susan Sto Helit on Binky, flying through something cool.

I thought to myself "What's the coolest part of the Disc I can think of, and that would be fun to draw?" and decided on The Rim. As it turns out, waterfalls are hard. But it was still fun.

Also anyone who knows anything about horses probably shouldn't look too closely at the bridle etc. Or the horse.

Hmm. Turns out finishing this doesn't stop me feeling like a big loser for taking another day off work :/

First of my fanfic prompts, for [livejournal.com profile] ilumiari.

Kaylee goes dress shopping

Doesn't really capture the image in my head, and made all mucky by my scanner (which has been acting up recently) but you have to let go with these things.

I had lots of time to draw this, what with having to leave work early with horrible stomach badness and all :/ (it calmed down after a few hours, thus giving me a chance to do something other than lie on the couch feeling grumpy sore and bored) I based the dress off this picture I found via google.

So, having won a drabble from [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic (will link when it is done) I was suddenly struck by the utter joy of the idea of commissioning people to write fanfic for me, and since I don't write fanfic myself (if I did, I wouldn't need other people for it) afaict my best option is to draw fanart (or pay money, but that's a bit blah)

So, to see if I have it in me to draw fanart on commission, and since my last "Tell me what to draw!" experiment went pretty well (and I need to draw more): the first five people to give me a fanart prompt get one for certain, and anyone after that gets one if I can be bothered.

Conditions etc, cut for those going *ewwww fanart...* )

I give you my final prompt: a ninja tupperware party

I liked the idea of using the way ninjas made themselves invisible (good disguises) rather than the "traditional" black outfits while still mainly using the western silly ninja stereotype (the idea of combining actual ninjas with tupperware has it's own appeal, but would have required more research :)) Sorry it's a bit scruffy, I drew it on the train in a tiny notebook.

Second last prompt (out of order because I'm still pondering a germ of an idea for edible_hat's one)

An octopus carrying a weapon in every hand (including spear, maul, katana, wakazashi):

Why yes, this is a role playing character dreamed up by a male geek :D

Painted before my morning shower (it's still morning!) in a vague attempt at japanese ink painting, since the character is japanese. And now, to get dressed, and then lie on the couch watching dvds for several hours, and then see Batman :)

Had a VERY annoying day today: my left foot is giving me sharp pains every time I take a step wearing shoes, which (apart from being unpleasant) meant I had to make do with what Sophie-friendly food I could get in the work canteen/had frozen, and didn't do my walk after work, and both of these have made me cranky.

But! I have drawn the next prompt. No points for guessing who suggested "A horse pretending to be a hippogryph in order not to be eaten by gryphons" :)

The griffin is wearing Kira's "You just woke me up, prepare to die" expression :) I realise it's not griffins, but this is the mental image the prompt gave me (inspired very much by the one from Alice in Wonderland, I discovered after looking for reference pics)

Next picture from this post.

Also, naturally, my (22 yr old) brother asked me for the address of my blog today, after happily ignoring it for all this time, because the universe knows I have a really bad picture of him in my previous post and enjoys making me suffer. So, sorry Mike, I suck, I know :)

Made in Spore and Photoshop, as a challenge to myself. The most annoying bit was removing the black edges from the Spore creatures (the only plain background colour for taking photos is black) I didn't put that much effort into it since Spore exports such low quality images.

Still, it was fun, I like the idea of making creatures in Spore and then giving them backgrounds, I may have to do it again. It'll be more fun when we get the full Spore game and I have access to more textures etc.

The results of this post. I may draw more later when I next feel drawingy.

Tommo, and a tap-dancing cassowary )

Had a fantastic time at [livejournal.com profile] tommmo's birthday last night. It was really nice talking to you all! Unfortunately I missed anyone who spent a lot of time in the room with the loud music (my throat was going funny and I didn't feel like yelling)
