LiveJournal by ME by [livejournal.com profile] aphephobia. Make sure you check out the comments.

What are you guys favourite places on lj you think most people would think are cool?

I went through all the comms I'm on in this post, the ones I think would have most broad appeal are [livejournal.com profile] little_details, [livejournal.com profile] fanthropology and [livejournal.com profile] trashy_eats. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] cooking too.

I had to leave [livejournal.com profile] vaginapagina because of the constant barrage of nsfw posts waiting for me when I got home from work, but it's pretty cool.

So as you may have noticed I've been talking about race a lot recently, plus a bit about gender and sexuality and other stuff like that.

One thing I tend not to talk about, at least not in top level comments, is class. It's not that I don't care, but I don't really have the language to talk about it: thanks to the vagaries of my upbringing I have fairly extreme left wing views which mean I get annoyed by mainstream (or right wing) analysis, but since pretty much everything I know I got by osmosis I'm not up with all the technical terminology etc that other people with similar views might have, and also 99% of the stuff I've read sets off my "Annoying socialist propaganda" alarms and pisses me off too much for me to keep reading.

So does anyone have advice for resources that might help me get a more deep and educated understanding (as well as figuring out quite where I stand) that's unlikely to either assume I've got an arts degree (or want one) or be thinly veiled propaganda for the authors views on how things should be rather than an attempt at an objective understanding of how things are? Bonus points for intersectionality.

So I just cut myself some of the bread I made earlier today and it's undercooked :( Mostly done, but a few mushy dough bits in the middle. Thanks to a mistake with temperatures it's a little overcooked on the outside so I don't want to bake it again (also it's cut now!)

Any clever suggestions on what to do with it? It's very nice bread otherwise, pumpkin spice with treacle.

Microwaving worked adequately, I guess, but it went a bit mushy. Toasting wasn't very effective. I guess I could make some sort of oven baked..thing (I don't think garlic bread would work with this bread!) Maybe bread and butter pudding.

Also googling "undercooked bread" found me a few other pumpkin/carrot breads(*), is this always going to be an issue? I did screw up the temperature (fan forced instead of regular), but not that much. Maybe I should make a smaller loaf next time.

EDIT: OOps, meant to post this to [livejournal.com profile] cooking. Well, if you guys have any ideas.... :D

(*)The only success story was cutting off the cooked bits then steaming the rest in the oven which I might try.

[livejournal.com profile] ithiliana made a locked post(*) asking her flist what GLBT people wish was better known by their peers at uni, and what straight people wish they'd known at uni. I found this a really interesting question, since by uni most people have gotten past the basic "Gay people exist and aren't evil" stage. EDIT: I haven't included stuff on non-monogamous relationships and other misunderstood aspects of sexuality like S&M etc since that wasn't part of the original post. Feel free to discuss them in the comments anyway :)

So, this is my answer, including stuff I've seen other people get consistently wrong:

So what do you guys think?
EDIT: I'm not going to correct this post since I'd be rewriting it forever and I think it acts an interesting snapshot into the brain of a well meaning but somewhat clueless straight person. But it's definitely flawed, and there's lots of important additions and discussion in the comments.

(*)to keep answers private, she said it was ok to mention it existed

I've been asked to buy someone japanese incense for their birthday. Anyone know where I could find such stuff?

Also: thankyou all for your advice on icecream makers! We bought a Sunbeam Snowy ($50 from Retravision) and made some tasty, tasty banana ice cream.

So lazyweb, as they say, anyone got advice on good brands and places to by an icecream maker? The only local place I can find that sells them at all (based on online catalogues) is Retravision, and they have off-putting names like "Crazy Scoops!".

I vaguely recall reading [livejournal.com profile] lizbyrd talking about getting one, but have forgotten the details.

So I have tracked down some dairy-and-soy free "icecream"(*). But afaict it only comes in licorice flavour. It's actually really nice, but the licoriceness gets a bit intense after a while. Normally I eat icecream with fruit or cake or whatever, but it's licorice flavoured. Anyone have suggestions for stuff to eat it with? Preferably soy/dairy etc free stuff :) I might try it with watermelon, that goes with star anise which is kind of licoricey...Maybe I should add some ginger. Hmm.

The company that makes it, "Gigi's Icecream" don't seem to have a webpage, they're a small QLD family business. I'm going to email and ask if they have any other (a) flavours and (b) WA stockists.

I get into certain moods where I feel like playing a video game, but unfortunately 99% of the games I've tried don't suit me. The final fantasy games are the best fit I've found(*) but I've run out for the moment, and I was wondering if there were any others people could recommend which do what I want.

Updated version

I thought about doing a poll (and may later) but people are so complicated decided it was easier just to ask. Partly out of curiousity, partly because having such extreme restrictions myself has made me want to be aware of other people's issues and cater to them where possible.

So: what can't you eat? I'm including moral choices and extreme taste preferences (ie you can't stand chili), but not anything where you'd rather not eat it but can put up with it if you have to, the operative word is can't.

So, mine:
I've gone back onto gluten (THANK GOD) but am otherwise being quite picky. So this is just where I'm at for now.

dairy eg milk, cheese, butter
coconut
soy protein or tofu, soy sauce and miso are ok
chili, paprika, red capsicum
alcohol
cocoa or cocoa butter, tea/coffee
artificial sweetners
too much acid (egfruits like plums and citrus, most fruit juices, salad dressing, preserved veggies and pickles, soft drink, vinegar)
spring onions/leek/watercress/chives
peppermint
too much fat (ie deepfried stuff)
mustard
kidney beans
raw apple/pear
most raw or undercooked vegetables except cucumber or lettuce
pine nuts
asparagus
xanthum gum or guar gum

Also some artificial chemicals disagree with me but apart from artificial sweetners I haven't been able to pin down which exactly, so I just avoid overly processed foods. Gluten free flour mixes are definitely all bad, I think it may be the xanthum gum.

The usual disclaimers apply.

So I was thinking about the scifi that doesn't get the love it deserves, and had an idea for a con panel: Hard science fiction for subjects other than physics, maths, and computer science.

Where here by "hard" I mean "Fairly scientifically realistic (given one or two "what-if"s etc), someone with a degree in that field would think it was cool rather than painfully innaccurate". Normal (ie mathsy) examples in this field are people like Greg Egan, Stephen Baxter ("Raft" had me doing 3d intergration to figure out the gravity field of his space ship :)), some Asimov etc.

The problem is: I have a degree in maths and computer science, so what the hell do I know about these other subjects :D On the other hand, [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood (who has volunteered to co-panelise it) has the right sort of degree but couldn't think of many examples :)

So, for those of you with a background in one of these other sciences what books do you feel make a genuine effort to explore the ideas of your field in an informed and inventive way? Any objections to our current suggestions?
What we can think of )
Right. Now both my panel ideas are out there I feel much better. They're both doing ok in the panel voting and I at least feel semi-prepared for it if they do get taken up. And if I'm sick on the day [livejournal.com profile] nico_wolfwood etc have my notes to work from, should they feel the need :)

EDIT: More discussion here.

Who's considering going to Aussie con(*) in 2010? Cam and I are going, since I want to go to a worldcon with my entire being and it seems like a perfect opportunity. With my health as it is(**) I'm not really up to exploring strange cities etc, but we've been to Melbourne before so as long as we can get a hotel nearish to the convention centre I can pack a lunch, choose a comfy corner and just sit all day. And with enough notice we should be able to save the 3 grand or so it'll cost all up even given our currently constrained financial state.

Anyway, I know it's WELL early, we take ages to organise anything so I wanted to think about it in advance. And I was curious to know if anyone else we know is pondering it.

Anyone going to Montreal next year?

(*)Note to anyone using that website: don't miss the tiny, almost unreadable links on the side. They're actually pretty useful once you notice them :)
(**)I may be a bit better by then, but I may well not :/

So I'm tossing up going to the swancon bbq. On the one hand, it's an awful lot of effort, on the other I would like to go(*). Cam is plausibly going to be too busy to give me a lift, and I don't want to organise a lift with anyone else in case I suddenly have to cancel. (The energy it takes to be there far outweighs the energy it takes to get there assuming I can find a low-walking public transport option)

Anyway, after much messing about with the Transperth website (and ringing their info line who had no idea what suburb Kings Park was in), looking at google maps it occurred to me that the best way to get there might be to catch a bus to the corner of winthrop ave/thomas rd and walk through the park.

Is this plausible? I don't think I've ever entered the park from that side so I have no clue and don't want to end up looking up at a cliff or fence or something (like I would if I took the transperth site's advice and caught the cat to Mounts Bay hospital. Clearly their algorithm does not consider vertical distance)

(*)I know they said to rsvp, but since I couldn't eat much last time, and now my diet's even MORE restrictive, I can't see me turning up being much of an inconvenience. I'll bring my own munchies and pay a donation like I did last time.

I've been pondering doing one of these for a while, but wasn't sure I'd get the wording right. Since it worked so well on his lj, I've decided to completely steal the language of [livejournal.com profile] angriest's recent post instead(*).

1. Tell me your religious beliefs. It can be as simple as "I am an X" or it can be a lengthy paragraph if you like. If you feel your religious and/or spiritual beliefs are private, either don't reply or leave a note saying as much.
2. If you want to reply to something someone else has written, feel free - particularly if you want to ask them a question about the religion you've always wanted to ask but have never been able to, or felt comfortable enough to.
3. This is one of the biggies: if someone asks you a question and you don't feel comfortable answering it, do not feel obliged to answer. Either don't reply at all, or drop a quick reply saying "I don't really want to answer that".
4. Religious intolerance will not be tolerated. I'm aiming this particularly at the aggressive atheists who seem to get their kicks scoring points, but the rule applies in any direction.

I know a lot of you are on both flists, I decided to do it now while it's still fresh in your heads. You are quite welcome to repeat/post a link to your comment over there! And yes [livejournal.com profile] fred_mouse I know you were also planning on stealing his idea, but, well, there's no reason it can't be stolen multiple times :D

(*)And yes, I checked it was ok. Don't want to be sued for copyright violation by the big mean famous writer :)

EDIT: Done! That was MUCH easier than ringing people from the yellow pages...

So I thought about what I want for my birthday, and there's various obvious things (I don't go shopping much, so books and stuff) but what I REALLY want..is for one or more people to weed my garden. I just don't have the energy and Cam Can't Garden. I've tried hiring people and nothing eventuates, so I think this might end up being easier (though if any of you are poor students and want the work I am totally open to it(*). It doesn't count as a present then though :))

Before anyone volunteers and then has to take it back, I remind you I live in Bayswater. Near the train station, though, and I am almost always home. I would happily chat to you from a shady spot :)

(*)I think $15 or $20 an hour is the going rate? Who knows in these financially volatile times.

So! As a reminder: here is the menu, it's in Hillaries Boat Harbour, and it's $37.95 pp for Saturday lunch (more if it was a Sunday or at night, cheaper for kids 12 and under)

[Poll #1289722]

My vote is Sat 22nd, if that counts for anything :D

Thoughts on my birthday

So, after completely failing to find any buffets which are both Sophie AND vegetarian friendly(*) I had a good think about where I wanted to go for my birthday, and decided I was still really, totally stuck on the idea of buffet. Specifically lunch at Jetty's.

But since this is going to put off a lot of people I thought I'd find out just how many of you wouldn't be able to make it, so I can ponder a second get together you guys can come to.
This is making me hungry... )

First: it is [livejournal.com profile] gelignite and [livejournal.com profile] mandragor2003's birthdays in the next couple of days and I have gotten them absolutely nothing. Sorry guys, I've been struggling to just get my head around my current situation which has been very distracting, and my brain (which is not at it's best at present) has been remarkably unhelpful everytime I remember and try to decide what to get you. Do either of you want a steampunk clock thingy? :)

Second: To the vegetarians on my flist, specifically the ones who would consider coming to a hypothetical party for my own birthday, where are some restaurants in perth which do a moderately good buffet and offer acceptable vegetarian food? Note that, for me, "moderately good" implies it has meat, sorry :P(*) Last year (year before?) we went to the local pub which was fine for me but has one of the worst vegetarian spreads ever and you all looked rather sad, so I'm hoping a compromise is possible. I know how sad I am when people have parties at restaurants where there's nothing/little I can eat (ie most of them, thus buffet, where I can pick out what I want and nibble at a little bit of the bad stuff too)

EDIT2: Keep in mind I and Cam's multiple food issues. It's been so long since I could eat indian etc buffet it didn't occur to me people would suggest it. Unfortunately, pretty much all I can eat is chinese/japanese/korean/vietnamese (ie most asian food which doesn't contain coconut, chilli, lots of fat, or tofu)(**), italian/greek, and european style buffets since they serve slabs of plain meat and vegetables. And even there I have to pick out a lot of ingredients most places, which is why I like buffet.

(*)If nothing else, I have yet to encounter a vegetarian buffet which didn't make me feel REALLY ill afterwards. And, well, it's my birthday, and I like meat.
(**)I realise there's probably lots of other little countries whose food I can eat, but I'm just thinking of the ones who get dedicated restaurants here. Malaysian chinese is ok too, but not the sort of malaysian food with lots of coconut. Thai and indian are OUT.

So, having won a drabble from [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic (will link when it is done) I was suddenly struck by the utter joy of the idea of commissioning people to write fanfic for me, and since I don't write fanfic myself (if I did, I wouldn't need other people for it) afaict my best option is to draw fanart (or pay money, but that's a bit blah)

So, to see if I have it in me to draw fanart on commission, and since my last "Tell me what to draw!" experiment went pretty well (and I need to draw more): the first five people to give me a fanart prompt get one for certain, and anyone after that gets one if I can be bothered.

Conditions etc, cut for those going *ewwww fanart...* )

So I was thinking not this week but the one after (ie the 10th) for Stargate, but I thought I should check with people (not that most of you even bothered to click "other" in my last one you lazy bums)

Remember: this is 6:30pm (till about 9:30pm) at my house in Bayswater, which has access by train and circle route. I will provide address details to anyone who wishes to come. People can arrive late/leave early if they have to.

Saturday, August 30th, 2008 10:18 am
So Cam has the full ten seasons of Stargate SG1, and I decided I felt like watching some of it. Since the episodes tend to be fairly stand alone and of variable quality I looked up the best 50 episodes and sorted them (see below poll) and then thought it would be nice to use this as an opportunity to see people, since it wouldn't involve me having to go out or talk much and thus is less prone to the "me getting sick and canceling" effect (of course, since it's at my house, me canceling is a bigger deal)

Edit: I live in Bayswater, walking distance from the Bayswater trainstation (though it's not a very short walk)

I was thinking three-four episodes, probably starting at about 6:30 on every second Wednesday night, people provide their own dinner with the possibility of arriving earlier and making a combined order of something. Episodes divided up so that people can miss a night and not miss the end of a cliffhanger. Anyone got any suggestions along those lines?
